The Waylanders Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Over the years, role-playing games have explored a lot of different settings ranging from the typical high-fantasy, D&D-inspired settings to sci-fi settings, but very few games have explored Celtic myths and lore. It's surprising, given that Celtic culture is extremely rich and well-suited for a video game setting, like the much more popular ancient Norse culture.
I’m a big fan of Celtic culture, from its music to its mythology. I’ve even spent a fair amount of time in Ireland and Scotland, soaking up the magic. The history of the Celts is a rich tapestry, but strangely absent from videogames (AC Valhalla excepted). So I was excited to take a look at The Waylanders, which has a story steeped in Celtic lore. While it does push its Celtic influences to front and center, The Waylanders is sunk by a leaky boatload of issues.
The Waylanders needs more work before we can call it fun to play.
The game is wonderful artistically, but it just has far too many problems right now to recommend. The developers, Gato Studio, seem to recognize this and are preparing updates, but once again I find myself reminding game studios how badly things can go if you release something before it is ready. It is really hard to gain back the trust of players after you lose it.
The Waylanders is an RPG that's endearing as it is janky. It has fun characters and looks stunning, so here's hoping that more patches can get rid of the (potentially game-breaking) bugs.
