Toy Soldiers HD Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I have not played Toy Soldiers on any other platform, so I thought it might be like playing with the plastic, little, green army guys on a game board. I was wrong on that one; this is really a tower defense game with some extras. Read More
Over a decade ago, the fantastic real-time strategy game Toy Soldiers debuted and it's back for modern consoles so let's go to war.
Toy Soldiers HD is a fantastic tower defense game that fans of the genre should definitely play. It's easy to learn, hard to master, and there's a ton of replayability with the lengthy campaign, the extra levels, collectibles, achievements, and survival modes, which I've spent a lot of time playing. The controls for vehicles can be a bit stiff and the lack of co-op multiplayer is a big disappointment, but given how few decent tower-defense games there are on console, it's easy to overlook the very few shortcomings Toy Soldiers HD brings to the table. Now, when are we getting Toy Soldiers Cold ...
I’ve been waiting to get my hands on Toy Soldiers HD ever since its first reveal during that bizarre period some dared to call a proper E3 last June. Even if it was basically an announcement that the franchise wasn’t dead and that it was getting a remaster that didn’t add new gameplay features. Although, the proper visual and performance enhancements you’d expect from a current-gen remaster were more than enough to make me happy. Toy Soldiers was a unique XBLA game from back in the da...
Toy Soldiers HD is a solid all-around package, though that $30 price point does feel a bit high. If you’re in the market though for some well-made hybrid tower defense, shooter, dogfighter then this plastic battleground should fit the bill. It might be ugly as sin at times, but it is a damned good time reliving an incredibly weird take on one of the darkest conflicts in modern history
As engrossing as ever, with hours of approachable tactical content to get stuck into. It's just a shame that it still very much looks like it was made 11 years ago.
Toy Soldiers HD is a decent remaster. The visuals look better than the original but that’s the bare minimum from what we should be expecting. Missing features and a lack of updating on the A.I.’s part is what’s holding back this title. I may have had a lot of fun playing as toy soldiers, but it’s more to the credit of the original’s design than it is to the remaster’s credit. I still recommend the title for the single player campaign and the extra missions. But that’s about it.
I have fond memories of booting up Toy Soldiers on my Xbox 360. As a fan of tower defense games, the concept of waging classic world war battles on a
Perhaps the most appropriate way to describe the Toy Soldiers HD experience in 2023 is “quaint”. Essentially, you’re playing a defunct and superseded genre, blended with ancient action mechanics, more than 10 years old. There has been no meaningful effort to do much more than upscale the visuals. Therefore, what you’ve got here is something that has its charms, but is archaic on every level. Toy Soldiers was never good enough to be a “classic”, so you don’t even get to enjoy the retro nostalgia that comes from early-era PS3/Xbox 360 games now. It’s just dated.
