Underworld Ascendant is just broken. What little roleplaying game fun there might’ve been is taken off the table by technical failings, a save system that feels like cruel and unusual punishment, and a bland story that takes place in similarly repetitive environments. Not one of the core systems for interacting with the world, be it combat, magic, or stealth impresses on its own, and that’s when they even work right. Underworld Ascendant is a difficult game. Not because the systemic design allows for so much experimentation. Not because the dark corridors and moody anti-chambers are filled with so monstrous enemies that are hard to defeat. No, Underworld Ascendant is a difficult game because it just doesn’t work.
Even if you can get past the countless technical issues, Underworld Ascendant is a poorly designed abomination that ruins the Underworld series even to those who've never heard of it. This is the final nail in the Immersive Sim™ coffin. Bury it and salt the earth.
