Valkyria Chronicles Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Valkyria Chronicles is a truly magnificent outing for SEGA. It dares to be different, it scoffs at genre conventions and finds its own path, and in doing so succeeds brilliantly as both a deep strategy experience and a wonderfully story-driven RPG. Yet its quirkiness -- in its visual style, in its thematic concerns and in its gameplay mechanics -- won’t find universal appeal. This isn’t a game for everyone, but those who fall for its charms will treasure it with a devotion bordering on obsession.

If you’re a fan of RPGs, you should really check the game out; the story is engaging and the characters are fun, but it’s the charming picture-book aesthetic and unique combat system that really make the difference. At a knockdown price with all the extra DLC included, there’s really no reason not to give it a go.

Valkyria Chronicles was one of the strongest RPG's released in the 2000-2010 decade, regardless of platform or origin. This PC port doesn't offer many of the options PC gamers expect, but it preserves and respects that experience. The strong story and gameplay remains intact, despite some small hiccups.

Valkryria Chronicles!!! Wait…..Valkyria Chronicles??? Really? In the scale of things likely to happen, a PC port of Valkyria Chronicles coming out in 2014 has to be directly under World of Warcraft becoming a first-person shooter. Don’t get me wrong, the original 2008 version for PS3 was beloved by many, but that was over 6 years ago, and Japanese developers and publishers have a storied history of ignoring or neglecting the PC platform. Apparently this release was the product of strong fan petitioning efforts, which seems even less likely. This really seems on the surface like a big win for e...

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most complete games you can find. The gameplay is incredibly fresh, and even with its minor flaws, makes for some excellent strategic combat. It tells a strong tale, with an even better cast of characters, held up by an elegant style, both in visuals and sound. The amount of content in this game speaks volumes to how much work and care went into making Valkyria Chronicles. If the genre of strategy role-playing games interests you at all, be sure to take a look at Valkyria Chronicles, as it just might be one of the best ever.
