Warriors All-Stars Reviews

Warriors All Stars does a fair job of being more than just a tie-in, and brings some genuine innovation to the table. If you ignore the trope-filled storyline and strange setting, it functions as a great stop-gap before the larger release of Dynasty Warriors 9 or as a meaty hack ‘n’ slash to get into in short bursts.

It's pure fan service, and the story is absolute nonsense, but it's the most fun I have had playing an Omega Force Musou game in a long time. Fans of this long-running series of games will love this, but it won't do much to make anyone looking in give the series a chance.

A gratifying love letter to fans that appeals mostly to those who also enjoy the Dynasty Warriors series.

Like any other iterative series, Warriors has its faithful followers that will devour every new entry with gusto. However, if Koei Tecmo wants to attract newcomers, I really think they need to start bringing some real innovation to the formula. Something beyond the minor mechanical tweaks in each entry. Something that will actually surprise players, and break the series out of its “fame” for repetitiveness.

Warriors All-Stars may lack even local multiplayer and have a few systems that could be better handled but the fact that it rarely takes things seriously and is unabashed at being a crossover game for the fans with tight combat controls and you have a title that has a little something for everyone.

Omega Force's long-running Musou series has featured a wide variety of spin-offs over the years. This time around, plenty of familiar faces from across the Koei Tecmo universe have come together to duke it out so let's get ready to hack and slash.

When you think of prominent Hack ‘n’ Slash games, most tend to think that the Warriors series is, hands down, the best there is out there. They’ve made it their business to provide an unforgettable experience with each game release and Warriors All-Stars is no exception to this rule. Warriors All-Stars adds a few fun new additions to the series, but ultimately falls short at making itself stand out for any reason other than the cast.  It allows many of Koei Tecmo’s stars from multiple games to meet up and cause massive amounts of mayhem in the name of good, but adds no interesting mechanics or hooks outside of continuing to provide a great Musou experience.

In terms of sound, All-Stars has decent music and stellar voice-work. Some of the high-energy tunes stick with you due to the excitement they evoke in-game, but the majority of the score is just that, a score. The voice work is excellent however, with extra kudos going to Koei for having William speak English, despite every other character in the game speaking Japanese. It’s silly to see him blatantly understanding what everyone’s saying while responding in perfect English, but his English/Irish heritage would make it odd for him to speak Japanese, so it’s completely understandable that they aimed for accuracy instead of story tone. The other characters sound great as well. Whether it’s Hayabusa’s stern but kind voice, or the more over-the-top and silly voice of Naotora Li, each character’s voice fits their personality splendidly.

Warriors All-Stars is good silly fun as the story never takes itself too seriously, nor do the cameos. But in the process a few huge staples we’ve come to expect have been stripped, much to the detriment of a project of this scale. I really wish it didn’t have to be an “either or” situation.

Warriors All Stars is a grand celebration of the history and popularity of Koei Tecmo. Unfortunately, the celebration fails to deliver a satisfying video game experience. Every time I had to re-unlock a character, or study three different menus to try and guess which missions I had to avoid so I could get the next proper story chapter, Warriors All Stars felt less like a celebration, and more like homework.

In the early days of Dynasty Warriors on the PlayStation 2, every new release felt like a new experience to be heralded in, no matter if it were a core entry, Xtreme Legends, or Empires. As the series grew long in the tooth, it took Omega Force trying to expand into other historical time periods or popular franchises to keep the series feeling fresh. As more and more IP’s grew under the Warriors umbrella, some marketing executive must’ve had the brilliant idea to mix together a majority of the IPs Koei Tecmo has gotten their hands on. The culmination of twenty years of Warriors games is finally here in North America: Warriors All-Stars for the PlayStation 4.
