Wave Break Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Wave Break puts a lot of barriers up to keep players from enjoying it. The disconnect between the visuals and the difficulty will likely be jarring for many players. But sticking with this game yields some great rewards, and the feeling of accomplishment you get is absolutely worth the struggle to succeed.
WIth a fantastic soundtrack and brightly colored environments, this wacky “skateboating” game captures a wonderful arcade skateboarding experience. The Campaign, however, can harsh the synthwave buzz.
Wave Break is Tony Hawks Pro Skater on water, and yes, it's as wild, wacky and occasionally wonderful as that sounds. It boasts the same combo-driven, objective-led action that skateboarding fans have come to know and love, and if you’ve grown up with Mr Hawks’ games there’s every chance you’ll enjoy Wave Break, as long as you can forgive some of its rough edges.
I won’t beat around the bush; Funktronic Labs’ Wave Break is basically Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but if you swapped skateboards for boats, and human skaters for cute little bears. Oh, and if everything was centered around Miami Vice‘s aesthetic, with the bears holding guns for some weird reason. In most cases, such a bonkers premise can only result in a game so ludicrous you can’t help but love, or a downright disaster. Wave Break is a weird exception that lies exactly in the middle. ...
It feels pretty disappointing to have to review Wave Break because honestly, it just broke me after a few hours. The gameplay was lacking in variety, there were no other people to play online with (I even double checked to see if the game was live at all, which it was, but nope, everything should be working). It just doesn’t feel like either a Wave Race game, a good skateboarding game, or even a good online multiplayer game. If this was a free-to-play title, I may even be a bit more lenient with it, but at half the price of a full retail game, I honestly can’t even recommend it for a laugh…
