Worms W.M.D Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Simply put; Worms W.M.D is the best entry in the franchise since 1999. Above and beyond its well-grounded strategy roots, the game elevates itself with some smart new mechanics. It's sure to please any fans of the pre-21st Century Worms games, and I would think it offers enough to get a whole new generation interested in the franchise to boot.

Well-rounded Worms.

The game performs exceptionally well and offers extensive battery life. The only downsides being some text appearing small on screen, and rebinding controls defaults to keyboard, making it essentially impossible to rebind.

Featuring enough new stuff to bring back longtime fans, Worms W.M.D is another great entry in the 20 year old franchise. The game doesn't reinvent the formula that has worked so well, but it does refine it in a number of important ways. With new weapons, vehicles, and visuals, Worms W.M.D should please anyone looking for an old school turn-based strategy game.

Prodding a pal’s worm onto a mine or off the edge of a cliff, hearing them roar in dismay as your airstrike exterminates their entire force, the endless ways you can test the limits of a friendship through unsportsmanlike trolling – this is the lifeblood of Worms. It’s as silly and glorious as it was at the series’ inception, not because it’s stayed the same, but because it’s grown with its audience, heaping on customisation options and countless new tricks while still maintaining that singular focus on creating memorable, explosive battles. So while Worms W.M.D. might evoke the halcyon days o...

Over the years Worms has tried a few times to freshen up its franchise by changing the formula a bit, sprinkling in 3D, and other gimmicks. Worms WMD is a back to the basics effort that proves the original formula is the best one. There is nothing broken about the gameplay. While it could use an injection of pace, it delivers a great experience both offline and in online multiplayer.

Worms is one of those bizarre game ideas that could only have come from the 16-bit era: A 2D, turn-based detonate-em-up pitting two teams of armed-to-the-teeth annelids against each other.

This latest entry in the long-running Worms series tries to inject some variation into the mix with the introduction of some high-powered vehicles and a crafting system. But, is that enough to differentiate it from previous games?

Aug 25, 2016

In contrast to recent games, Worms WMD feels more like the classic Worms titles with its explosive mayhem and tongue-in-cheek humour. Vehicles, turrets, and crafting all freshen up the formula somewhat, while the new 2D art direction mixed with the classic simplistic structure of Worms campaigns make for a welcome and familiar experience. Still, there’s not much out there quite like Worms and Worms WMD is a great rendition of that explosive madness.

There’s no reason any new player to the Worms franchise wouldn’t get a quick kick out of this one, but it’s difficult to recommend the game to series veterans who can get a cleaner experience from the entries they currently own.

It took plenty of time, but Team17 has finally found what new gaming features compliment the 2D landscape, and has dropped the features from previous titles which didn't. Gone are half-baked water physics and worm classes, replaced by more creative and complimentary features like vehicles, crafting, and building interiors. The three combine as a recipe for pure chaos, resulting in one of the funnest Worm experiences we've ever played. Veteran fans and new gamers alike should find plenty of entertainment and endless hours of multiplayer replayability with Worms WMD, which is undoubtedly the bes...
