The Case of the Golden Idol Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
As much as I want to keep on gushing about the ideas and stories in The Case of the Golden Idol, I really don’t want to take anything away from those who may be interested in playing it. There is an additional DLC chapter that has even more stories to discover and those are without a doubt some of the hardest puzzles in the game. Even if the idea of a point-and-click adventure game scares you off, The Case of the Golden Idol can be understood and enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in detective fiction. The stories can be gruesome and horrific at times, but that also makes them intriguing…
The Case of the Golden shook up the detective point and click genre, and rightfully so. You can tell a lot of love and passion has been put into every element of this game, from its narrative that weaves through the scenarios and the perfect way it allows the player to unfold the mystery for themselves through their game mechanics. It can get a tad overwhelming at times with some grand schemes to unfold, but if you play it at your own pace, you’ll constantly be rewarded for figuring out how the game works and who has poisoned who this time.
The Case of the Golden Idol is the sort of Sherlockian adventure game I wish there were more of.
Solve a string of grisly murders in this inventive detective adventure.
Stretch your deduction skills to their limits and untangle a web of deceit in this innovative nonlinear detective game that's putting a truly unique spin on the genre.

But I fear that many will struggle with the sheer patience required to play on controller, and while it all works just as well it can, it’s a case that many players may not want to solve in the end. And that’s a shame. Here’s hoping touch support on Cloud can step in!
There’s no feeling quite like solving a difficult puzzle in a mystery game. When things start to fall into place, when you manage to understand what the hell is going on around you, when you finally realize an incoming plot twist, and so on. That’s what makes real deduction games so appealing for a specific niche of players. I’m not talking about the more simplistic detective-styled games, like the Sherlock Holmes titles, as good as they are, either. I’m talking about the real “get ...
Witty, observational writing and a hands-off approach to deduction elevate this excellent period murder-mystery to a singular work.
This handsome detective game isn't quite the second coming of Return Of The Obra Dinn, but it does come pretty damn close. An entertaining story told through a dozen murders, The Case Of The Golden Idol is a mystery well worth solving.
