Some would scream it’s a fictional take on reality, and to that, I say, yeah, you’re goddamn right. Slice-of-life romps would be depressing if they attempted to emulate the bullshit we live through daily. I don’t know about you, but that sounds miserable – so I’m immensely appreciative of developers like Marvelous and publishers such as XSeed. Their fantastic Story of Seasons ...
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is a faithful remaster of the 2004 Gamecube title. Featuring a myriad of quality-of-life improvements and a memorable gameplay loop that goes through the chapters of your player's life, A Wonderful Life provides an alternative, more grounded approach to the farming and slice-of-life genre.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is actually the third remake of the cutesy GameCube farming sim Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. This PS5 remaster collates the new features added by the PS2 special edition and Another Wonderful Life on the GameCube before bringing the game into the modern day, and it mostly succeeds in being a stand-alone experience, as well as a remake of a classic title.
Remakes and remasters are more common than ever in 2023. What's most interesting is seeing how these new versions handle the issue of completely rebuilding versus simply making modern visual improvements. Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is a remake of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life that straddles the line between these two philosophies fairly evenly but still delivers an outdated experience in various aspects.

Minor changes here and there aren't enough to mask Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life's problems. It does offer up some interesting ideas though, and I hope a future entry implements them in a more engaging way.
