AI: The Somnium Files - Nirvana Initiative is a masterfully crafted murder mystery visual novel that smoothly blends in detective gameplay elements and puzzle sequences. It features an outstanding cast of characters and a competently crafted narrative that will keep you on your toes until the end. Even though the game has a smaller flowchart in terms of diverging narrative paths than the first game and may feel drawn out at times, it remains well worth checking out if you are into games of this genre.

When half of a body turns up during a live game show, it’s a horrific incident. Everyone is shocked, a police investigation is launched, and it’s a mystery that doesn’t have a good answer. When the other half of the same body turns up in a stadium six years later, it’s no random coincidence. The unsolved mystery re-opens, and the answer isn’t going to be simple.

Not quite as good as its predecessor in some ways and notably better in others, AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative is a must-play for fans of anime-styled narrative games.

It’s full of pervy jokes too, so those unfamiliar with anime humor will likely be thrown off by the tone shifts. It’s like a friend nudging you every few minutes, asking “Hey, wanna hear a penis joke? What about a boob joke?” But somehow, it works. It’s the only sex joke-filled series that can get me emotionally invested between the lighthearted banter and porno-mag gags.

Spike Chunsoft has done it again with AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES nirvanA Initiative. They tell an incredible murder mystery that’s a ton of fun to figure out, all while solving brain-bending puzzles and talking to a colorful cast of endearing characters. There are a lot of performance issues and bugs, but those are nitpicks compared to just the sheer joy of diving into people’s minds to solve the case.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – nirvanA Initiative marks the second title in what most thought would be a one-and-done mystery presented by infamous scenario director Kotaro Uchikoshi. After the mystery of the New Cyclops Serial Killings was neatly wrapped up, it seemed like the story of Date, Mizuki and Aiba were all neatly wrapped up. However, only a short time after the conclusion of Kaname Date’s first case, a new mystery has sprung up: a corpse, perfectly bisected into two, left at a crime scene with no murder weapon and no clues as to who did it. To make matters...

By far my favorite part of this game though is the writing. Few games are legitimately funny, or truly clever. The AI series so far is two for two in both areas, and nirvanA Initiative is consistently hilarious and fiendishly smart. Fans of the first title know how insane things get yet it all made sense in the end. The writers here have done it once again and I found myself constantly guessing up until the end, with a conclusion that elevated everything I had seen and been a part of to dizzying heights.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES- nirvanA Initiative is an amazing point-and-click adventure and an even better murder mystery. I truly believe that it belongs on the shelves of most gamers, but I really am mad about that one puzzle. Also, 9 is a really funny score if you’ve played the game.
