Anomaly 2 brings improvements over every aspect of the original, from unit-morphing gameplay to lush and detailed visuals.
A lot of people complained about the game’s lack of variety from the original in terms of gameplay, but I find them being a little harsh towards the developers, while the game costs only $14.99. Any game with such innovativeness and addictively worth lot more than that. More verity in terms of tactical approach players can imply during missions, and additional features to turn the gameplay more complex is certainly welcoming. It’s never simple to make a mixture of fast-paced click-happy and slow-paced strategy genres, but Anomaly 2 is a breathing example of that. Not only the tower defense gen...
Tower defence is more of a niche genre for a particular subset of gamers. The slow pace and constant, strategic management of resources that characterises the games may sound like either a fun time or a monotonous drag to you, but something like Anomaly 2 is, er, an anomaly. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play as the attacking force – usually the “bad guys” – in a tower defence game? Speculate no further because 11 Bit Studios has answered that question with something it likes to call “tower offence”. We can certainly admire the aspirations of the developer in trying to design...
Anomaly 2’s campaign feels a lot like the original, but it still offers up plenty of expertly designed strategy thrills with plenty of replay value. The addition of its innovative competitive asymmetrical multiplayer is the big draw here – as long as everyone takes the time to learn the complex rules, that is.
Graphically the game pretty much looks like a shinier version of the first, but it’s still a pretty damn nice looking game. Everything from the way the concrete heats up from scorcher burns to the satisfying as hell explosions all look great. I only wish there was some way to play through the perspective of the commander so that you can get a real sense of scale. You’re fighting these massive aliens that don’t particularly look very big so it’d be neat to be able to play from the ground issuing orders and such.
Anomaly 2 is the follow up to the successful 2011 game, Anomaly: Warzone Earth. You play as one of the last remaining convoys on a frozen Earth, looking for supplies to keep going while fighting your way through mechanical alien towers, hell bent on destroying you. Your main goal is to punch through the alien forces to the anomaly and finally defeat the aliens. In what is, in essence, a ramped up, reverse tower defense game, you play as a squad leader who has to lead your convoy of vehicles through the briar patch of alien towers and come out the other side intact. While this sounds simplistic...
Anomaly 2 builds upon the original in every way, leaving me to wonder if this is as good as the concept of a deconstructed tower defense game can get. Anomaly 2 is an immediate and exciting strategy game unlike any other, but over time the repetition and lack of depth leaves something to be desired. It’s a welcome distraction on a phone or tablet, but the limits of the game are quickly noticed when played in long bursts on PC. For fans of the first that looked past these shortcomings, Anomaly 2 is a bigger, smarter, and better looking game.
It's all about the multiplayer this time around in the Anomaly franchise. Anomaly 2's singleplayer portion is basically identical to the first game, so if that was your jam, then by all means, go weapons free. If it wasn't your jam, then maybe the multiplayer will keep you interested. Either way, there are fun and interesting gameplay ideas hidden away in Anomaly 2 that can keep you busy over a boring weekend.
