Professional reviews from gaming critics

I’m not sure what kind of potentially neat stuff might’ve been left on the cutting room floor to get the game in such a mean, lean state, but I respect that self-control.

Wondering what if, instead of a boomerang returning to the thrower, the user returns to the weapon? That's the question Boomerang X answers. Sprinkling some very useful abilities into the mix, developers DANG! created one of the best superhero experiences out there.

Boomerang X is a fresh take on the arena shooter. Focusing on one weapon, the range in abilities and the ceiling for skill make frenetic combat exciting in just about every instance. The game is rather short, but that works perfectly for the pace of both the story and combat. Only feeling dull in the moments between the action, DANG! and Devolver Digital have an impressive indie on their hands wit...

Someday, I’ll meet whomever is responsible for Devolver‘s title curation and pay that superhero a drink or three. The way they so frequently manage to find and publish so many games with crazy ideas, most of them following a very cohesive “Devolver-esque” attitude emphasizing fun above everything else, is just amazing. Even though their last game, the good but flawed Essays on Empathy, wasn’t exac...

Intense, fast-paced, and insanely fun. Like old-school DOOM game on steroids.

Depending on how you view it, the longing for more by the time the game ends could be a great thing or an awful thing. For those with an eye for perfection and optimization, re-playing Boomerang X to hit better and better times acts as the replay value. One-shot players may find themselves at a loss when the short campaign closes. Buyer beware.

We’ve all played games that have one or two elements that are strong enough to carry the entire experience and possibly make us forget about the missing stuff. Sometimes it’s graphics, or memorable characters, hair-raising atmosphere, or precisely tuned combat. In the case of Boomerang X, an arena/wave-based shooter from DANG! and publisher Devolver. that One Strong Thing is the game’s primary wea...

Boomerang X is a polished and exciting action platformer with throwing stars and excitement, but not much else.

Fantastic gameplay paired with a game structure that resembles a tech demo makes Boomerang X worthwhile, even if it doesn't live up to its potential.

Boomerang X is a title that is very simple and very focused in its approach. Coming to us from indie studio DANG! and publishing label Devovler Digital, this first-person “boomeranger” plays out like an arena shooter, albeit with a uniquely stylised weapon of choice. A huge amount of work and effort has gone into polishing the moment-to-moment gameplay of Boomerang X to a mirror shine. The small-s...
