Even if the RPG elements are a little too shallow, Chroma Squad has great gameplay and a big ol' heart and presents it all with a smile.

Chroma Squad‘s music and sound effects are fitting, though the music is typically hit or miss. Some tracks prove to be truly memorable and full of fanfare, while others are short enough to become tiresome rather quickly. The sound effects are great though, with plenty of explosive action sounds and zany comedic sounds. They tie together the gameplay well, adding yet another layer to the painstakingly designed silliness of Chroma Squad.

Chroma Squad is what you get when you combine Power Rangers and tactical RPGs, but lack the actual Power Rangers IP. Frankly I went in not expecting much, but have come away not only impressed but wanting more episodes and seasons to dazzle my fans with.

Also, there’s a lot of potential here for some real mythology to be created within this universe-in-need-of-saving. Until then, Chroma Squad is a nostalgic step in the right direction but it might take some time before we take bigger strides in giant mech feet.

Some game premises are simply built for success; Chroma Squad is a strategy RPG that is clearly inspired by Mighty Morphin Power Rangers so let's see if this combination adds up to a morphin' good time.

Chroma Squad isn’t particularly deep or epic, but makes up for it in heart and charm, nailing the Saturday morning antics of its inspiration and creating a cheery game that anyone can enjoy.

That kind of glee, though ephemeral, is why we bother with nostalgia at all. It's an easy thing to say but it's a hard thing to catch in a game, and Chroma Squad succeeds. Without the license it is free to evoke a minor era in children's television, rather than slavishly following branding precepts, and its approach feels fresher than a hundred reboots of old properties. As a game it is no kind of competition to a contemporary like Invisible, Inc. Everyone already knows, however, whether they're interested in this for other reasons. Chroma Squad is a decent game but, far more importantly, it is a little time capsule, a big tribute, and a perfect period piece for big kids.

Capturing the true spirit of Saturday morning cartoons, Behold Studios’ latest adventure is a testament to the fact that fun comes first, and despite a few flaws, Chroma Squad is first and foremost a ton of fun.

Many who grew up watching Power Rangers or similar series would have dreamed of being part of their very own sentai squad. While Chroma Squad doesn't simulate that exact dream, it perhaps offers next best thing by putting players at the helm of a studio producing such shows.

Few things can grab your attention like a modern revival of one of your favorite childhood brands. While Chroma Squad isn’t a licensed Power Rangers game, it doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the influence; the title screen even includes a nod to Power Rangers. When this nostalgia-laden inspiration meets simplistic tactical gameplay, Behold Studios makes it easy for all sorts of players to jump in and enjoy the action, but is unable to keep that momentum.

Fairly superficial gameplay and recycled ideas hamper Chroma Squad. The game is saved, however, by tongue-in-cheek writing and an excellent premise. Chroma Squad definitely won’t set the pond on fire but is still enjoyable.

Despite the delay, Chroma Squad still maintained its hype up until today. The devs did a good job of utilizing the delay to further improve the game. Some sources and even rumors say that there’s a possibility that the devs would expand the game to even include the Kamen Rider series. Looking at the issue it had undergone, I could say that it just made the fans love the game even more. Well, it really shows that the game was created out of passion because the devs themselves are big fans and they know where to hit their fellow fans to make them feel good. Backers and those who just purchased the game would really feel giddy while playing the game, especially the top backers who get to see themselves be part of the game with their own game characters. Toku fan or not, Chroma Squad is a 10/10 must play for me.
