The Dead Space series was cancelled a decade ago after three instalments, at a time EA was convinced games-as-a-service were the future. But it turns out single-player blockbusters are still in demand (see also upcoming Star Wars sequel Jedi: Survivor), and there’s plenty of interest in sci-fi horror, as seen by spiritual successor The Callisto Protocol. Better sound the remake klaxon, then.

Dead Space is a remarkable achievement in design on all fronts. A loving and intelligent remake that reminds players of what has been lost in AAA games and what can be found again if you just know where to look.

If the mark of a good video game remake is that it preserves the original experience and makes it feel the way it felt the first time you played it, then consider Dead Space a success … by default. That’s because the original 2008 action-horror game still feels perfectly modern to this day, even with some dated visuals and storytelling. I should know, because I just played the original for the first time one year ago. For a project like this, not stomping all over its source material’s corpse would be the franchise’s safest move.

Remakes can be somewhat of a touchy subject nowadays. While many are welcomed with open arms, others can have their very existence called into question. Fast forward roughly 18 months and EA Motive is ready to release what has been pitched as a faithful retelling of Isaac Clarke's nightmare aboard the USG Ishimura. The final game proves that to be true.

Taken as a whole, Motive Studio's Dead Space remake is an unmitigated success that builds upon its predecessor's story in small yet meaningful ways. It both looks and sounds phenomenal, and the Necromorphs at the heart of the horror-action still remain one of the medium's most bone-chilling adversaries ever. It's been a long time coming, but Dead Space is finally back... to make us whole again.

Its legacy is still felt even to this day, but does the first installment in the late, great franchise still have what it takes to scare your pants off almost a decade after its original release?

While Dead Space is ultimately a decent game, it’s let down by a couple of large flaws, such as the poor execution of the story and the repetitiveness of the gameplay. The monotony of the enemies and the environment might put you off playing through a second time, and since the game is fairly short, maybe around 10 hours long, this might make you think twice about handing over your hard earned cash for it. Fans of survival horror games will almost certainly enjoy it, and there is a good solid game to be found in Dead Space if you...

Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.
