Professional reviews from gaming critics
Demon Skin cherry-picks mechanics from your favourite games and presents them in a deliciously gory fruit salad.
The point is, considering Demon Skin is quite short, the progression available and the idea of its stance-based combat system make for a unique experience. The problem is that it struggles to keep the player engaged, especially since every time you die, you have to return to the last checkpoint. This means you will be replaying portions of levels a lot as you will die frequently, either by the blade of a sword or by some environmental hazard such as bodies of water or spikes coming out of the ground. I am getting so tired of games comparing themselves to Dark Souls, and I’m saying that as a fan of the souls-like genre. The problem is that this term is constantly applied in the wrong way, and so many seem to think that difficulty equals souls-like. Demon Skin is one of these examples, by utilizing their unoriginal “YOU ARE DEAD” death screens prominently in their trailer footage, they seem to take great pride in how hard their game is. To drive this point home, in their game summary, they even directly compare their game to Dark Souls.
Demon Skin. Does this mean the game is about the skin of a demon, or is it about skinning demons as you would an animal you've just hunted? Maybe it's set in the world of One Piece, and it's about the skin of the Devil Fruit, but devil and demon got mixed up in translation. Honestly, it could be about any of these, and I wouldn't have the foggiest of clues. What I do know is that Demon Skin is a side-scrolling hack & slash platformer.
Demon Skin definitely needed a lot more work. It’s a buggy mess and a number of features mentioned in the help section or announcement trailers are just straight up missing. At its core, it has a plot they seem to be trying to do something original with, and a combat system that makes blocking more engaging. They could have done so much more, but at the end of the day I cannot recommend getting this.
