We’re a funny lot, the human race. Capable on the one hand of compassion and understanding, we’re also simultaneously prone to bouts of some much less desirable traits. Doki-Doki Universe from HumaNature – a team made up of some of the creators of 16-bit classic ToeJam & Earl – takes you on a tour of, well, human nature by putting you in the metal shoes of robot QT3, a cyborg whose very own survival depends on understanding what makes others tick.
Doki-Doki Universe’s heart is in a great place, and its charm and startlingly accurate personality analysis provide a completely novel experience the likes of which I’ve never seen before. Its slant on side quests and completionism did, at first, scratch an itch for me, but Doki soon suffers from its sheer repetition, especially because it lacks any sort of tangible challenge. Doki-Doki Universe began to stumble from exceptional to acceptable as the hours wore on.
Space problems.
Doki-Doki Universe is a very odd, very cute, and very simple game. There isn’t a whole lot to it, so don’t go in expecting a deep and rewarding adventure title. So long as you don’t mind spending an afternoon helping a tiny snowman bond with his father, Doki-Doki will be more than adequate.
Doki-Doki Universe is a cute and interesting timesink, but some uninspiring stories and mechanic issues keep the game from shining and replayability low.
From the creator of ToeJam & Earl comes a game about a robot searching for humanity. Doki-Doki Universe has players flying through twenty different planets, all in hopes of finding what makes humans tick. Meet more than a hundred characters and solve missions in this quirk, though terribly shallow, adventure game for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita!
