Extinction

byIron Galaxy Studios2018

As far back as anyone can remember, humanity has been at war with itself. For generations, kingdoms have fought amongst themselves while the real threat loomed in the distance. Legend calls them the Ravenii, encroaching armies of bloodthirsty monsters standing 150 feet tall that once threatened to destroy humankind. Now the threat has returned, and...

Extinction Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

If you are looking for a game that will give you an adrenalin rush by letting you fight a giant ogre, then you may come away satisfied from Extinction. When you are felling a Ravenii in slow motion, things can get real gratifying, you just do have to trudge through a ton of mediocre and repetitive elements to get there. Extinction's story and some repetitiveness do ultimately let the package down as a whole, but I am glad to see Iron Galaxy tried tackle a different idea outside of their comfort zone, even if it didn't pan out entirely.

Thanks to a nuanced combat system, Extinction is fun hack ‘n’ slash experience whose poorly executed story and repetitive mission design stops it from being memorable for all the right reasons.

Simple, but solid gameplay bogged down by repetitive randomly generated mission

While not an awful game, this is definitely not something I’m going to be overtly suggesting to my friends. IThe game is made up of a simple kind of fun and not any sort of deep and meaningful systems or mechanics. Topped off with a generic and negligible story, Extinction only manages to keep its head above water due to how fun chopping up ogres can be.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

In a best case scenario, Extinction would have you employing Avil’s traversal capabilities to swiftly damage Ravenii, then give enough reasons to move back and deal with smaller foes while saving civilians and filling your execution bar in the progress, thus making use of all of the game’s elements. In practice, it utterly fails to value them properly, and doesn’t flesh them out enough to make engaging with them past the first few missions worthwhile. It’s functional, runs smoothly and has competent voice acting. Past that, when it comes to gameplay it fails to keep things interesting, resulti...

Extinction is a frustrating mess that has problems that in this day and age shouldn't exist. Camera problems, repetitive missions and frustrating climbing mechanics will have you rage quitting before you get halfway through.

Apr 10, 2018 Read Review

There is an interesting concept here, and much of the execution is fun, but a lack of polish and depth, with no real effort to expand upon the core mechanics, means missions rapidly fall into the trap of feeling repetitive. Extinction is filled with neat ideas, like balancing fighting the Ravenii with the threats to civilians, but never finds a way to make anything other than facing the biggest threat make sense. I can’t help but wonder what experience might be like if more of the levels we...

When you’re done with the campaign there are various game-modes to play around in if you want to keep hacking away at Ravenii. The first up is the daily challenge which as you can expect delivers a new challenge to the community every day. As a leaderboard sucker it’s been nice being near the top and look forward to comparing scores with my friends. Extinction is your typical “survive as long as possible” mode where the game will just continue to toss increasingly more difficult waves of enemies at you until you bite it. Finally there’s Skirmish where the game will randomize a seed code that w...
