Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Prepare to enter a world of steampunk, magic and wonder. Final Fantasy IX is the ultimate love letter to the RPG genre. Created by Squaresoft (now Square Enix) in 2000, the game boasted beautiful graphics, captivating story and a massive world to explore. Now that the game has been remastered for current gen, does it still hold up today?

It came as both a shock and a relief when Square Enix not only announced it was re-releasing Final Fantasy VIII, but the iconic title was being remastered as well. While it’s not the full-on reimagining that Final Fantasy VII will be getting, an HD upgrade is still a nice show of support for one of Final Fantasy’s most polarizing titles. After all, VIII was notably missing from the gaggle of Final Fantasy games announced for various platforms earlier in 2019.

Square Enix concludes the Pixel Remaster project with the release of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. Can the nostalgia hold up in this definitive version of a Super Nintendo classic?

The game is as good as its ever been (apart from that atrocious font) and I wouldn’t disagree with anyone who says this is the best version of this game. Personal thoughts surrounding the opera scene not withstanding, the Pixel Remaster version of Final Fantasy VI truly feels like it is the best way to experience this game.

A wonderful story that is now supported by great looking characters and backgrounds, Final Fantasy VIII is worth the pickup twenty years after it's initial launch.

While it might not do everything in its power to earn that 'Remastered' title, this port still offers some compelling reasons to replay the best Final Fantasy game of all time.

One thing that pretty much all fans agree on is that Final Fantasy VIII has an incredible soundtrack. Remastered uses this same soundtrack, and it’s still absolutely stunning. Lots of series classics, like Fisherman’s Horizon, Don’t Be Afraid, and Man With the Machine Gun, come from Final Fantasy VIII, and they sound as exceptional as ever. I’d also say that Final Fantasy VIII has the best version of the iconic victory fanfare, which makes hearing it every few minutes delightful.
