Forgotton Anne is an evocative, artistic triumph that nails that feeling of a ‘living anime’. Sure, the puzzles are hardly mind-blowing, and some later sections may test your patience, but the beauty of the art and the gentle humour of the writing should carry you through these irritations. Animation buffs should dive in without reservation, and we’d recommend anyone with even the slightest interest check this out.

The story won’t shock and disturb you as much as Game of Thrones might, but it’s a story anyone can engage with. It’ll even have you reeling in genuine grief when you’ve distilled an old sock.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the stop-motion animated TV special from 1964. This holiday classic takes a dark turn when Rudolph visits an island occupied by toys no one wants or could love anymore. Forgotton Anne explores this concept as well, but the focus is much wider, expanding to everything a person may have discarded in their life – socks, a lamp, or even a prized family heirloom. This setup is whimsical and colorful, and getting lost in the beautiful anime styling is easy. But the weight Forgotten Anne applies to difficult moral...

Forgotton Anne is a bit heavy-handed with its themes at times, and its plot beats are sometimes abrupt, but those are easy flaws to overlook in such a charming story. In both its presentation and its storytelling, it really does feel like an animated film in video game form.

I don’t want to spoil the story, as unravelling it is surely the draw of Forgotton Anne, but it’s sufficiently captivating without ever being too over the top; it really is the sort of narrative you can imagine playing out in a Ghibli film. Throughline Games really ought to be applauded; Forgotton Anne is something rather special. If this is the calibre of the studio’s first game, I really can’t wait to see what else it comes up with.

Forgotton Anne (yes that is how it’s spelled in this game) is a hand animated 2D side-scroller which focuses on telling a heartfelt story. It has light puzzle mechanics mixed in that, despite their simplicity, are always challenging enough to lead to player satisfaction. With its Studio Ghibli stylings, Forgotton Anne is truly a breath of fresh air in the indie space both visually and in terms of gameplay. With a strong set of original ideas backing it up, Forgotton Anne is not a title indie fans will want to pass up.

Capturing the essence of classic animated films, Forgotton Anne is a gorgeous game to look at and tells a whimsical tale of forgotten things come to life. As lovely as the style is, it also affects the substance of the game, with the low frame rate animations leading to awkward feeling platforming and some puzzles that are rough around the edges. If you can look past the flaws, there’s still a rather lovely and charming tale here to explore.

Forgotton Anne has no right to look as good as it does. From the amazing backdrops to the character design and even animation, this game is a stunning piece of art. The world looks hand-drawn and screenshots almost look like movie frames. Obviously, the camera angles and level design give the game away, but even so Forgotten Anne is spectacular to look at.

Forgotton Anne is a wholly unique and evocative experience. While it delivers on the selling point of the beautiful hand-drawn anime art style, it backs it up with fantastic story and engaging gameplay. This is truly something special we have here, something that must be explored by anyone who can get their hands on the game.

Under the Square Enix Collective banner, some wonderful games have released over the past year or so, many of which are platforming-focused. Black The Fall is an ingenious, puzzle-centric experience framed around the Romanian developers’ experiences with Communist oppression and Octahedron is a vibrant, fast-paced vertical platformer with a pulsating soundtrack. Now, the next game to be given the limelight is Throughline Games’ Forgotton Anne, an cinematic adventure game set in a world where everyone’s forgotten items go to live their own lives, and it continues the Collective’s streak of quality releases.
