After a five year wait and seeing the great things Codemasters has done with the Dirt and F1 franchises, I expected more from GRID. 2014’s GRID Autosport remains an impressive racer even today, and I was hoping that this reboot would carry the torch and expand the franchise, much like Dirt Rally 2.0 did. Sadly that’s not the case. It’s not a bad game, and the driving genuinely feels amazing, but it feels like they forgot to add the rest of the game before launch. Put in a few hours and...

Ultimately, Codemasters plays it safe with GRID, for better and worse.  There's certainly a lack of features, less modes, and a lesser number of cars and tracks than other contemporary racers.  This is a no-frills arcade racer, but a very good one.  If solid racing action is the only thing you care about, GRID has it in spades.

Once again, Codemasters has proved that it deserves a place in the grand pantheon of racing game developers with GRID. Alongside the DiRT games and F1 series, GRID is another exemplary racer that will scratch the itch of even the most demanding racing game player.

What this reboot of the GRID franchise does well, it does really well. Stunning visuals with great car models and lighting mixed with a 60 FPS experience and an excellent sense of speed goes almost unrivaled. The engine sounds are an orchestra to car enthusiasts' ears and the handling engine is the perfect blend of arcade and simulation. These aspects of the game feel up to date, but while I respect the desire to keep the game mostly a single player experience and negate the open world flavor of recent arcade titles, most of the game outside of the racing...

The past couple years have been rocky for Codemasters as the acclaimed racing game developer has released broken games like Micro Machines World Series, laid of huge chunks of the studio after Onrush‘s commercial failure, and come under fire for a lack of content in recent releases. Despite this, the studio has been quite busy as it has released eight games since 2017 (including three in 2019). Earlier this year, Dirt Rally 2.0 offered up a great rally racing simulation that was held back by its DLC plan and lack of difficulty options. Now the developer is back with a...

As a fan of Burnout, Need for Speed, and Forza Horizon 4, I took this GRID reboot as an opportunity to experience a new franchise.

GRID is an enjoyable racing game for those who want to enjoy some close racing without worrying about camber angles. The market needs games like this to provide light and shade. I was hoping this new GRID would be a fresh start, but it's last night's takeaway re-heated. I enjoy leftovers – cold pizza is one of life's great pleasures – but that doesn’t make the perfect racing game when the rest of the world has moved on.

GRID has an identity crisis. It is an amalgamation of ideas that are really great on paper that don’t really work in tandem. You can find better arcade and simulation styled experiences that don’t feel as disjointed or dull. Sure, GRID has variety at its side with the various types of vehicles you can drive, but it’s not enough with its repetitive courses and essentially non-existent rivalry system. With that being said, I do hope Codemasters does attempt to refine some of the ideas in GRID and implement them in future racing titles.

The experience at the core of GRID is undoubtedly a great one. The racing is exciting and keeps you on your toes, moreso than any other racer currently available. But there just aren’t enough modes to keep your attention in the long term. Additionally, many features that should make GRID shine feel shallow and inconsequential, and you soon feel like you’ve exhausted all of the game’s tracks. GRID simply needed to be more. As just a procession of events and little else, it’s fun while it’s presenting you with something new, but that doesn’t last long.

A solid racing experience, GRID has enough under the hood to appeal to both hardcore and newcomer racing fans.

Rebooting a franchise involves taking something with a beloved history, updating its technology, and imbuing it with the spirit of the times. Grid, however, doesn’t fully live up to this objective. It simply does not contain enough beyond Codemasters’ solid racing gameplay to jumpstart the brand in this day and age. The Grid reboot brings the franchise back, but without pushing past its previous incarnations, it feels like it’s just going around in circles.

Announcements have already been made for post-launch support which include more tracks, race types, and multiplayer events, but the core game is still lacking in a few areas. Diehard fans of the racing genre will find plenty to love, but for the rest, there’s a chance that GRID will run out of gas a little too soon.

The GRID reboot finds itself in a no-man's land of racing games: it's neither granular nor friendly enough.

I’ll admit that I’m more a fan of the arcade-style racing games than those that put heavier focus on realism, so I’m much more looking forward to Firebrand Games’ next racing project: Trackmania DS. But GRID is still an impressive effort that has a lot going for it, and it’s a slight improvement over last year’s already impressive Race Driver: Create and Race experience. GRID is best played on the console, but the DS game offers up its own unique take on the core racing design, enough that it’s definitely worth a look.
