Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Project DIVA Future Tone is easily the most content complete Project DIVA title yet. It's not perfect - and it won't necessarily appeal to all fans of the series - but it nonetheless stands as one of 2017's first must buy titles.

Split up between two separate titles beneath the Future Sound brand, the latest Hatsune Miku release has more than enough toe-tapping songs no matter which Vocaloid you’re fond of. Nearly every track from the last four localized Hatsune Miku titles has made their way into the nearly 230-song roster of Future Sound. If you're looking to simply play the tracks that you’re most familiar with, fans might want to prioritize one version over the other. Future Sound contains nearly every track from the previous Project Diva titles, while Colorful Tone contains the catalog of Project Mirai tracks off ...

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone is a completely focused rhythm game that has a few odd decisions such as certain songs being locked to a difficulty level but otherwise provides a must have experience for Hatsune Miku fans.

Future Tone is a rare case where the sheer quantity of content is matched by the highest quality. Packing catchy beats, addictive gameplay, and some serious challenge, this is one title that is worth coming back to for years to come.

There's so much content here that it's going to keep the most ardent Hatsune Miku fan busy for quite some time. If you've played previous games in the series, there's no reason not to grab this one, if only just to have all the content in one central location.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone is the closest we've gotten to a true arcade-style rhythm game in a while, and it's simply great.

Some may argue that it could be stale, but I’d rather have a quality title with solid gameplay over a concept that falls flat on its face and brings down the IP. Future Tone is a slam dunk for newcomers and veterans alike, and I can’t recommend it enough. It shows why people fell in love with it in the first place, and it’s a great way to fall in love with Miku and the gang all over again…or for the first time.

Songs not sung by ‘actual’ humans – that’s what Hatsune Miku, a synthesizer with a humanoid persona known as a Vocaloid, produces. Hatsune Miku is just one of a handful of Vocaloids that have gained popularity over the years, but her being one of the most popular amongst them. Hundreds of songs have been made using the various Vocaloid variations that have sparked music videos, collectibles, and video games. Based on the singing function of Vocaloids, it’s only natural that the video games would be related to their music in the form of a rhythm game.

On the whole though, it’s easy to recommend Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone to fans of the world famous vocaloid. Those who have never sampled the delights of a Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA game would be wise to download the free Prelude edition of the title too, just to see how quirky and addictive it can be. Its huge catalogue of songs comes complemented by some sublime visuals and animation, and whilst those who look for some sort of structured progression in their games may find themselves out of luck, the sheer number of unlockables on offer makes up for it in my opinion. Think of Ha...

2015's Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X was a little bit of a departure for the long-running rhythm game series. Rather than adhering to the traditional, gameplay-focused framework of the franchise set up in earlier instalments, X thrust players into a sugary sweet narrative starring the popular virtual popstar and her equally saccharine friends trying to save their world through the power of song. Depending on your tolerance level for cutesy characters with improbable haircuts discovering the meaning of friendship by joining together to sing songs about (among other things) accidental pregnancies...
