A love letter to a genre and its forefathers. Infernax has plenty to say and plenty to offer outside of nostalgia. Making a neat space for its own brand of gorey metroidvania, Infernax’s mix of challenge, combat and utility produces an undoubtedly satisfying experience. With plenty of flesh to chew on, the explosions of meat between the teeth never fail to deliver.

One of the hardest things for a game to create is the experience of gaming as a kid. Many of the players who got their footing in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras are now fully grown adults, potentially with the income to get all the games to their heart’s desire but not the time nor necessarily the drive. Developers, big and small, have sought to connect to the market that’s nostalgic for the days of pixel art and limited directional control, and it’s been a hit or miss sort of market.

When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

In the first 10 minutes of Infernax, I faced a choice to kill or spare someone who asked to die. I chose to kill them, and without a moment’s hesitation, my character’s mace crushed through their skull. Their face was mangled, with eyes popping out the sides, as the mace destroyed everything between their nose and the cowlick on the back of their head. It is a brutal introduction to the “kill or spare” choice system that presents itself a handful of times throughout Infernax, and it was only a taste of the carnage that’d soon color my crusader’s journey...

Infernax is a great retro-styled title that adds in enough ideas of its own to stand up to modern standards. The gory combat and interesting level design maintain interest throughout, and there is lots of potential for replayability through the different moral paths to unlock. If retro gaming is your thing, then Infernax is a great game to add to your collection.

There is an overabundance of retro-inspired games but here's Infernax; an indie that does quite a decent job of bringing back the past.

It’s not terribly long to beat once – about six hours for a playthrough – but you’ll want to go through at least twice, and there’s even some things that keep things fresh on a second playthrough so you’re not quite retreading the same game a second time. If you’re a fan of old-school action, definitely pick this up!

A gory affair, there’s a hell of a lot to like about Infernax. The tried-and-tested gameplay sits alongside purposefully dated but nonetheless charming visuals, but the freedom you have really sets this apart from other games in the genre. Will you save the world or be a blight on it? That’s up to you. And while you may always have good intentions, sometimes your decision can have unexpected results. In any case, you’ll have a lot of fun slaying monsters and developing Alcedor as you play.

Overall, Infernax is a title I didn’t know about a week ago and has quickly sucked me in and become one of my top titles to play for 2022. It is available starting February 14, 2022. I highly recommend this for anyone who is into retro-style RPGs and platformers. Have fun and enjoy it as much as I have.

Even though it was initially difficult and with very basic combat, Infernax wooed me with its comical gore, beautiful music and simple art style. Infernax will not be everyone's cup of tea but if you have a bit of time and want to play something a little different, I can recommend it. Just beware, you initially may need to navigate a bit of a skill wall of sorts to progress.

Not very lengthy, but bolstered by strong level design and tight controls, Infernax is a worthwhile experience.

Look, all you need to know about Infernax is that it’s a love letter to the 8-bit era of gaming. It’s a game built on the nostalgia that old timers like you and I have been lusting for since the dawn of 3D gaming. It’s fun, challenging, as much as it is beautiful, and repulsive with its gore-fested visuals. It’s a game that’ll put a smile on your face the moment you boot it up, and keep it until the credits roll.

Infernax tries and, for the most part, succeeds at replicating what made the classic 8-bit Castlevania titles so beloved, making a conscious decision of ignoring the improvements of the 16-bit era, while also implementing a few more modern progression elements. The result isn’t the most unique game ever, and a handful of design choices left me slightly puzzled, but what matters is that the game is fun, rewarding, and polished enough to appeal both to aging fans of the Metroidvania genre and newcomers alike, albeit the latter group may find the difficulty a tad overwhelming at times.

While Infernax is tough, it's resolutely fair — you can't really make the game 'easy', but you can absolutely mitigate the difficulty or take a break doing something else when you get stuck. Don't expect a simple ride, though, and don't expect to take the right decisions on a first playthrough - not that anything seems particularly 'right' in this beautifully bloody little world. It's only familiarity that lets Infernax down — there's nothing really new here, but it's all done and delivered so well that you won't really care unless you're desperate for a completely fresh experience. In which...

When I set out to review Infernax, I thought I knew what I was getting into. It’s basically just Castlevania with a bloodier aesthetic, I told myself. I was delightfully wrong. As I said in my preview of Infernax, this game is very self-aware about its gory and sometimes schlocky contents. Oddly enough, this allows it to touch on one subject Castlevania never quit for me: religious horror. I won’t describe Infernax as nuanced, exactly, but there’s something very raw about it at times. This title walks the line between straightforward gory fun and a surprisingly interesting, largely non-verbal exploration...

Infernax is a great game that I highly recommend to anyone who loves challenging platformer games that sound and look great. Especially if you don’t mind figuring out what needs to be done next and aren't disgusted by blood and gore.

Given its strict adherence to an ’80s gaming mentality, Team Berzerk’s tough, visceral platform adventure might not be for everyone. But, for those who crave sadomasochistic challenges, doomsday storytelling, and absolute lashings of the red stuff, Infernax offers up a cathartic dose of 8-bit heathenism. Just run through a few FromSoft titles beforehand… You’ll need to warm up, after all.
