Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series - Episode 1: Tangled Up in Blue Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series – Episode One: Tangled Up In Blue is without a doubt one of the best Telltale Games episodes I have ever played. It is undeniably a strong start for the series, filling me with optimism for what’s yet to come. A culmination of a great cast of characters that have been well represented, a solid script full of drama and humour, and tried and tested gameplay systems that have been finely honed, Guardians of the Galaxy Episode One is a must for fans of the unlikely group of heroes, as well as anyone who’s a fan of the story-driven adventure genre.

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely starting off on the right foot, with a great script, great actors, and a universe packed with personality (and backed by catchy tunes) to explore. If it can continue to deliver the quality of dialogue and panel-perfect action over the course of the rest of the season, it may find itself seated in the upper echelons of Telltale’s catalog. I just hope that now the series has introduced itself, the series gives its environments and characters just a bit more time to breathe in between speeding the plot along.

Telltale Games had a difficult task ahead of them but Tangled Up in Blue proves that at least so far they have set up a satisfying start to a new series with a solid hook and most of what made the cast endearing to begin with.

The music in Guardians is stellar, no pun intended. With licensed music from the likes of Hall & Oates and The Buzzcocks, Guardians perfectly emulates the retro space-opera atmosphere of the films, and is straight-up jammin’ in and of itself. I was worried about whether or not there would be such iconic music in a game adaptation, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear some of my favorite songs come on throughout the episode. The original score itself is perfectly fitting as well, but nothing can quite beat the game’s licensed music choices.

Since its inception in comic form, and later in its cinematic incarnation, Guardians of the Galaxy has always flown by the seat of its pants, both in creative decisions and narrative arcs. Frantic pacing, weird characters, and over-the-top situations somehow coalesce and triumph through pure pulp craziness.
