Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Now that Capcom has ported all of the main entry games to console, I hope that they bring us the Mega Man X games next in a collection. Or maybe even Mega Man Legends 3 -- a guy can dream, right? If you haven't played the original six games, I'd say the original Mega Man Legacy Collection is a better buy in terms of quality when compared to this one, but nonetheless, Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is still great, and the best way to replay these classics.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is worth it for 9 alone, but you’ll also get to experience several legacy games that were passed by. I’m still holding water for 8 all these years later, and due to some amazingly camp artwork and stellar animations, it’s one of the most “showable” Mega Man games to date. I think a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised by it, as well as the near flawlessness of 9 — even if 7 and 10 are just as wart-filled as they always were.

When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

It's great to see that some game developers still care about their catalog of retro titles. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 offers an assortment of The Blue Bomber's later games but are they worth revisiting?

Mega Man fans must be in the most curious conundrum these days. There hasn’t been a new title featuring the blue bomber in years, Capcom seemingly content to let the character rest on his laurels. Instead, we’ve gotten guest appearances in games like Super Smash Bros and Marvel vs Capcom, the upcoming animated TV show, and the Mega Man Legacy Collection series. Part one of the Legacy series was a whirlwind tour of the NES era, covering every major title from Mega Man’s 8-bit catalog. Part two is a bit more of a hodge-podge, featuring one Super NES game, one PSX title, and two digital releases....

The second Mega Man collection is a touch light on content, and by this point the formula has grown tired. That doesn’t mean there isn’t joy to be had though, as what is on offer remains as solid, colorful, and stimulating as ever.

All told, Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 feels like a letdown compared to the stellar presentation of its predecessor. Missing features and lower quality games easily make this the more skippable of the two, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that this is a bad collection. We’d recommend this to any fans of the Mega Man series – 9 and 10 just about justify the collection on their own – but those who are looking to get their feet wet may want to pass on this and just get the first collection. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is good, but it’s not great, so think twice before taking the plunge.

I did like going back through the four games on offer with Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 overall. The features included are exactly the same as the first Legacy Collection and the way saving works now makes for a fairer challenge that doesn’t make things too easy. It’s just a shame the enhanced version of Mega Man 8 wasn’t used and Mega Man & Bass was not included, as it gives the impression Capcom’s heart wasn’t quite in it. It’s a decent collection, but plays things far too safe.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is a great way to check out Mega Man's later outings, but the presentation just seems a bit lackluster between the challenges not being as interesting as the original game or the puzzling omission of Rockman & Forte/Mega Man & Bass.  The museum and music box modes are still good and it's nice to still practice against the various robot masters.  What we did get is still pretty good, but not quite as good as the original Legacy Collection.

Blue Bomber B-Sides

Aug 10, 2017 Read Review

Especially next to the first Mega Man Legacy Collection’s six games and nicer save system, The Mega Man Legacy Collection 2’s package of four included games is ultimately a step backward. While the games are mostly good, none of them top Mega Man 2 or 3 -- and for the record, I think 3 is the best. 8, 9, and 10 are worth revisiting for a dose of retro platforming challenge, but know what you’re up against going in.
