Mega Man 10
The 8-bit old-schoolers of the world have spoken. And boy, did they do so decisively. When Capcom released the NES-style Mega Man 9 back in 2008, they did it as a piece of one-off fan service, and no matter how good the game was (and it was very, very good), no one expected another 8-bit offering in the core series. While subsequent games in the series are also rock-solid, nothing quite reaches the level of zen that the original Mega Man X does, and if you've never played it, I envy you! To play Mega Man X for the first time would be a real treat. If you've played it already, you know how good it is, and you've probably already bought it. If you haven't, what's wrong with you?
Despite being the second NosCon Mega Man title to release on Playstation Network, Mega Man 10's retro-stylings and razor-sharp MIDIs are as engaging as they've ever been. Factor in the new "Easy" mode that makes the game actually beatable and you have an old-school package that should appeal to everyone.
So yes, progression in gaming is a good thing. But when you're talking about the classic Mega Man series, the world of 8-bit is precisely where it belongs. And because of that refusal to take a big jump forward, Mega Man 10 delivers. This might be quite the statement for many, but I stand behind it 100%: in terms of pure gameplay, Mega Man 10 is easily a better game than 90% of what we play on a yearly basis. And you can take that to the bank.
The year is 20XX and a suspicious outbreak of Roboenza, a Robot Flu, has broken out. It spreads through the world like wildfire bringing down robots everywhere. Infected robots have rampaged out of control, destroying the city and holding it hostage! Who’s behind this mess? It’s up to Mega Man to take on this sinister threat and get to the bottom of this viral mystery.
MM10 is a glorious return to the hay-day of 8-bit gaming; a fantastic challenge built on the back of some of the most refined mechanics the genre has ever seen.
