Mugen Souls is a fun game when you don’t look too much into the intricacies of the gameplay and characters. It has value giving more Disgaea type ridiculousness but not with Disgaea.
If you've been reading this review and thinking, “This guy just doesn't 'get' Japan,” I implore you to reconsider -- not for the sake of my reputation, but for the sake of your wallet. This isn't about “anime bias”, nor is it about culture shock. We could all argue until we were blue in the face about how things that are taboo here are accepted there or how different their sense of humor is from ours. That isn't the point. I got every joke in Mugen Souls, I just didn't find any of them terribly funny. Whether your tastes align more with the East or the West, poor game design is still poor game...
Taking many ideas and themes from NIS's own Disgaea franchise, Mugen Souls provides an RPG adventure that starts off quite promising despite an over-abundance of moé.
