New Gundam Breaker Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

The Gundam Breaker series took quite a long time to get released in the West, despite the huge popularity of the Gundam franchise, but it now finally made it in North America and Europe with New Gundam Breaker. New Gundam Breaker is a "new" entry in the series in more ways than one, as it shakes up the series' formula by introducing a variety of new features. While many of the new features are quite interesting on paper, the execution is definitely mediocre, with both gameplay and technical issues damaging the experience.

We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.

New Gundam Breaker definitely has some great nuanced aspects to its core concept of mix-and-match mech model making, but what it needed was more variety to spice up the gameplay. While last year’s Gundam Vs was nothing mind-blowing it was a much more solid and mixed combat experience. If New Gundam Breaker succeeded in anything, however, it would be making me want another Dynasty Warriors Gundam game. If you’re a hardcore fan of giant robots you may want to pick up a copy to keep your collection complete, but other players may want to wait for Bandai-Namco to build a better Gundam game.

New Gundam Breaker is visually stunning when it’s not chugging at a consistent 15 fps. There are times when, in combat, the game will freeze for 3-5 seconds straight, whether playing offline or online. While a lot may be happening on-screen, it’s inexcusable to have such ridiculous drops and freezes be so frequent. While Bandai has said that there will be patches to address this in July, the issues as they are now keep me from saying this is anything but embarrassing.

New Gundam Breaker is a good concept, shoddily put together. The story is a trope-fest, battles are confusing and the masses of text are hard to read. There are so few positive points it’s not funny.

The weird need to reinvent itself onto a competitive format has damaged this newest Gundam game every step of the way.

I’m truly sorry. From the bottom of my heart, I am. I had wished and wished for years that Bandai Namco would give Gundam fans outside Japan a proper way to experience some of the amazing games they’ve developed in the series. Today, this wish has come true, but like a cursed monkey’s paw, it has come with a terrible price. New Gundam Breaker is available in Europe and America, yes, but it is also terrible. It is not fun to play, look at, or think about.

New Gundam Breaker is such a bad game that it makes me feel bad for Gundam fans. I picture a 12-year-old Gundam fanatic that has saved up weeks' worth of lawnmowing mowing money, sitting with a controller hanging loosely in her hand, staring at the screen and crying. This is a game that should never have come to market, regardless of how much hard work went into its creation. To ask anyone to pay money for New Gundam Breaker is outright offensive.
