Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch originally released in Japan 17 November 2011 for the PS3. Years later, we revisit Oliver’s journey to the other country, in upgraded resolution and frame rate (PS4 and PC only). The game is otherwise mostly untouched, so, how does this story go? Incidentally, the sequel, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, launched on both PC and PS4 23 March 2018, which we’ve reviewed prior.

Originally released in 2011, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was actually an enhanced version of a DS game released a year prior. At the time, it was a PS3 exclusive, a console I did not own then and still don’t own to this day. It was one of those games that always made me want to buy a used PS3 just so I could experience it, alongside a few Yakuza titles as well as Resistance. After many fans were left disappointed by the 2018 sequel, this remaster is sure to remind the community why the original 2010 release was so beloved. The remaster is a great reminder of the potential that the series had and hopefully any future iterations of Ni no Kuni return to this winning formula and bring back the story, cinematics, and combat system that all come together to help make Wrath of the White Witch a modern classic.

And if you've played Revenant Kingdom already, well, go and play that again. The main story beats are almost laughably similar to Wrath of the White Witch, so it's not like you're even missing out on a brand-new plot, either. Much like that weary town guard you encounter at the beginning of the game, I've ultimately been left broken-hearted by my experience with this Ni No Kuni remaster. And alas, there's nothing in the real world that can magic it all better.

In the end, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is just as fantastic as it was upon its initial release. From its Ghibli-illustrated cutscenes, to its brilliant world and characters you can’t help but fall in love with, it remains one of the finest JRPGs of recent years. The remaster is handy if you don’t have a copy on an older console, but if your PlayStation 3 is still in working order, you may want to hold off on grabbing this one until the price goes down a bit. Unless you have a PS4 Pro and can enjoy...
