It's more of the same but that's not a bad thing as the gameplay is incredibly fast, frantic and fun. A great game on it's own but if you aren't a fan of Dynasty Warriors style beat em ups, this game might not do much to change your opinion on them.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, from a gameplay standpoint, is simply “more Pirate Warriors 2.” It doesn’t really do anything new outside of the slightly different Kizuna system, and veterans will likely favor the Dream mode instead of the retreading story. Despite its Frankenstein-esque shortcomings, Pirate Warriors 3 is a beautiful game, and still a lot of fun to play locally.

If there’s any great thing that harms One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, it’s the overuse of the format by which it’s presented. One Piece is a lush and imaginative universe with fantastically bizarre and cool characters and storylines. Of all the ways to experience One Piece — a daunting task, considering how much of it there is — Pirate Warriors 3 isn’t a bad choice. It does its source material justice, and the heavily condensed canon story is as fun to experience as ever. One Piece’s unique style of fighting also translates quite well to musou combat, but fitting in the story bogs down that combat somewhat. Instead of enjoying both fighting and dialogue, it became a weird kind of chore to play through battles just to progress the story.

Despite this being my first Pirate Warrios game, my years of experience with Warriors titles goes back to its reincarnation as a 3D action brawler. After all these years, there’s something refreshing about Pirate Warriors 3. Although familiar, the combat takes on a new feeling thanks to the change in setting. That said, I’m sure those who have played previous One Piece adaptations won’t get that same sensation.
