Ten years after it debuted on a handheld a fifth the size of a PS4, Patapon remains an utterly unique experience. For the life of me I couldn’t tell you what lessons it could hold for future games, but I’m glad it’s in a position for more folks to enjoy all over again.

Need a new rhythm game? Then Patapon Remastered provides updated visuals and audio, as well as an addicting gameplay experience as you rhythmically guide Patapons to Earthend. This combination refines the original experience on PSP. The combination of the gameplay and updated visuals and audio provides an enjoyable experience, full of quirkiness and peculiarity.

Patapon Remastered shares some of its DNA with two other re-released, obscure Japanese games from Sony. Like PaRappa the Rapper, its gameplay boils down to following the beat of the catchy music, and its cutesy vector art style is similar to LocoRoco. It does plenty to set itself apart, however, with a rhythm/strategy combination that’s just as unique today as it was back on the PlayStation Portable.

Sony has always had a tough time solidifying their gaming legacy. For so long, the PlayStation thrived on third party releases while their first-party lineup took a backseat. Franchises stall out across the generational line and mascots become tied to individual consoles rather than the PlayStation brand as a whole. I don't know if my expectations were too high, but due to a unforgettable soundtrack, lacklustre strategy mechanics and largely boring gameplay, Patapon is an interesting concept, which couldn't decide whether to focus on the music or strategy elements and ended up in an awkward and messy middle ground.
