Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a simple game that anyone can pick up and play, but belies a deeper feel for combos like a traditional fighting game would, while adding a minimal skill tree for damage and speed boosts like an RPG. It’s deep without being too deep, which makes it just the right amount of fun.

All taken together, Phantom Breaker offers a couple hours of mindless, mass-bashing fun. It has some of the same charm as old-school beat'em up arcade games like Turtles in Time, but with an Japanese anime theme. It's fun for a time, but it passes quickly, and it's very easy to move on without looking back.

Overall its a decent game that’s fun to play, but is even more fun if you have a friend or two that can play with you. The online play is smooth and there are some hidden things that can be unlocked like more difficulty levels and more characters. If you’re into old school beat em ups look no further than this. If nothing else, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is enough of a success that I wish there were more games like it out there.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds may have nice animations, interesting, old-school-inspired environments, and the heart of a classic beat-'em-up, but its gameplay pales in comparison to its more quality-oriented, difficult, and well-balanced competition. It's an easy, almost mindless romp. Should you throw caution to the wind and download it anyway, go in with seriously tempered expectations. Even with unlockable characters, Trophies to earn, a surprisingly deep leveling system, and multiple difficulty levels, it's hard to imagine truly engaging with Battle Grounds for very long.
