Nintendo covers new ground with messy colour in Splatoon - and creates one of its finest games in a generation in the process.

Splatoon is the best game on the Wii U.

In a sea of rock-solid single-player Nintendo experiences Splatoon is a standout as being an utterly sublime multiplayer endeavour. Everything is knitted beautifully and seamlessly together to create what is quite simply some of the most fun you can have online. Having been built specifically for online play it'll face the challenge of avoiding too many hiccups, but conceptually proves that the Big N is capable of keeping up-to-date with this particular modern gaming trend. The single player elements and the local multiplayer also present a way to enjoy the game when you're not geared up for t...

There are essentially two online modes in Splatoon. You’re forced to start out in the Regular Battle arena. This is where you learn the basics, earn cash and find your perfect combination. Nintendo’s 2002 platformer, Super Mario Sunshine, gave players a singular mission: Clean up the world with a water pack. Splatoon, on the other hand, is all about coating the world with ink. While this messy disposition may seem like Sunshine’s antithesis, the inspiration of Mario’s GameCube adventure abounds in Splatoon. The controls, the physics, and even the level design deliver a familiar level of Nintendo polish. Splatoon looks, sounds, and plays great, but with some design elements and a lack of content weighing it down, I was left wanting more.

Is the Big N's latest game the one that rescues the Wii U?

Jun 10, 2015 Read Review

Splatoon is a game that will flourish based entirely on the number of continued users it maintains and the prowess of its online system, the latter of which was hit or miss during our pre-release playtest sessions. Still, this unique take on the shooter genre is one that shouldn't be missed by anyone that's looking for something that feels wholly unique, let alone fans of Nintendo. There are certainly short-comings that veteran shooter aficionados will pick up on right away, but the game's willingness to march to the beat of its own drum is admirable and often enjoyable – if not occasionally f...

The most original and enjoyable online shooter of the generation, but the lack of content at launch means it may be months before it reaches its true potential.

Two and a half years into the Wii U‘s lifespan, the best games have been entries in tried-and-true franchises. Super Mario 3D World. Mario Kart 8. Super Smash Bros. And The Legend of Zelda is by far the biggest game still on the horizon.
