Through its picturesque presentation, Ravenlok definitely captures the reverie and spirit we’d expect from a coming-of-age fantasy. Sadly, the game’s one-note combat doesn’t offer a challenge worthy of its world, while the cliched story devalues its charming cast of misfit critters.

I’ll be honest, I had never heard of the indie developer Cococucumber before seeing a trailer for Ravenlok. What surprised me even more was that this wasn’t the studio’s first title. In fact, Ravenlok is the third and supposedly final entry to their Voxel Trilogy franchise. Their first game was Riverbound, released in 2019 to mixed reviews, followed by Echo Generation in 2021, which was met with more success. Cococucumber’s development growth can be clearly recognized when looking int...

Although they’ve evolved into complex games with deep skill trees, timing-based moves, and endless depth, action RPGs really only require a few basics to be fun. Even young players require a coherent narrative, a strong main character, and some degree of customization. Add visual appeal, some clear goals, engaging missions, and combat. Get those things right, and your game will probably do just fine. Of course, if it was that easy, every action RPG would be a bestseller. Does Ravenlok, the final entry in Cococucumber’s Voxel trilogy, go beyond the basics?

There are countless works inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Ravenlok is here to inject action RPG gameplay to the mix.

Ravenlok possesses the blueprint for a fantastic series inspired by novels and fairy tales. If Cococucumber expands on the narrative experience and strengthens the combat system in their next outing, wonderful adventures await.

Ravenlok is an action-adventure game where you voyage through a mysterious Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-esque world to defeat an evil queen. While the game certainly succeeds on the atmosphere front through its soundtrack and visuals, the gameplay does not match that same standard, featuring simplistic combat and a deluge of fetch quests, interspersed with some occasionally clever puzzles.

In Ravenlok’s well-paced narrative and gameplay structure, I’m sad to say that I didn’t find the game to be very compelling. For every fun puzzle there was another quest or dull combat sequence that I button mashed out of with ease. Still, I could appreciate the expectations the game places on the player to simply figure things out on their own and having a straightforward, no-nonsense plot. A lost art in gaming (and arguably other mediums) today.

At just about five hours long, Ravenlok is an enjoyable title with simple gameplay design but stunning setting and voxel graphics.

Ravenlok is not for hardcore gamers that want to invest hundreds of hours into their games or who are looking for a challenge. It's a short, sweet, easy game that's perfect for sitting back and relaxing or as a good starter game for kids. It's totally at home on Xbox Game Pass and subscribers shouldn't miss their opportunity to check it out.

If you have kids interested in things like fantasy storytelling and adventure games, but titles like the recent Legend of Zelda feel like too much for them, Ravenlok is an easy suggestion. And if you’re just looking for something breezy that’s visually enticing but not much of an investment otherwise, you can do a lot worse than this. It may be a little monotonous and unambitious, but the adventure is over well before it can overstay its welcome. Ravenlok feels like a nice piece of fluff that’s polished and genre-heavy enough to be fun, but won’t address any cravings for...

With more refinement, Ravenlok could’ve been an interesting twist on a beloved tale. In its current state, though, it’s just simply okay.

Ravenlok is a cute and short game where you play as a girl who stumbles into a magical world and finds out she's destined to save it. The combat is shallow but functional, and the game's charm is through its interwoven quests and gorgeous environments.

Ravenlok is an outstandingly beautiful game, but, unfortunately, that beauty is only surface-level. While it held so much promise and potential, the final product is a gorgeous piece of art but an incredibly flawed and restrained action game, lacking the charm or depth that would elevate it to something special. Here's our review of Ravenlok on PC.
