Playing Samorost 3 is like paging through a children’s storybook, one with many movable parts and the most beautiful of illustrations, but this story can also dance and bloom and challenge you — all without words. In the latest adventure of the white-capped “Gnome”, Amanita Design brings forward another brilliant point and click adventure game that comes to life under the player’s touch.

Samorost 3 is a relatively short journey, taking about five to six hours to beat and a little more to fully complete. That time is jam-packed with delightful characters, stunning scenery, and clever puzzles, so while it may be brief, it’s certainly time well spent. For anyone who appreciates Amanita’s previous titles or the point-and-click adventure genre in general, Samorost 3 comes highly recommended.

It’s a very musical universe, too. The gnome uses his magical flute to listen to sounds and often imitate them, which is key to solving several puzzles, but that isn’t the only time music comes into play. On one planet, you’ll work to get a group of amphibious creatures singing at the correct pitch to give you the item you need. On another, triggering a chorus of insects rewards you with an achievement.

Samorost 3 is a beautiful game and definitely worth experiencing if only for the visuals and musicality. It is a pleasant adventure with some great ideas, but is let down by its short gameplay and sometimes frustrating puzzles.

And you can’t stay mad even when bumping against one of the few frustrating sections. Samorost 3 is so bursting with life, so lovingly crafted, that it’s impossible not to adore. I cannot think of a game whose soundtrack comes close to this, and few that are so pretty. Gnome’s yelps of delight, or enthusiastic dances, or the way he sometimes says, “Hop!” when he jumps, are idiotically adorable. It’s so alive, so intricate, and so graceful.
