Shadowrun: Hong Kong Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Finally, the dialogue. I cannot describe how much I loved the dialogue in Shadowrun: Hong Kong. From Is0bel’s standoffish demeanour to Kindly Cheng’s evil but soothing tone, every conversation felt visceral, grounded in the world. The way the dialogue is presented paints a picture of every scene in the player’s head, thanks to its descriptive nature as well as the amazing character portraits that accompany the conversations. Compounding on this is the etiquette system, which gives unique dialogue options depending on the situation. For example, choosing the socialite etiquette gives unique opt...

Shadowrun: Hong Kong offers a steady evolution of Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun experience. It's such an enjoyable game that a director's cut wouldn't need to do much to boost it from an excellent, tactically engaging family conspiracy to a must-have.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong lives up to the reputation of its predecessors and remains one of the best RPG series in recent years.

Truth be told, some players have signaled game-breaking bugs in a couple of places. I did not encounter any of them, and none seemed to be widespread. Thus, what do we get when we draw the line? Shadowrun: Hong Kong may be a familiar cyberpunk paradise for some and an altogether alien destination for others. However, for tactical RPG fans, it's still home sweet home.

Sep 28, 2015 Read Review

Shadowrun: Hong Kong doesn't change much about the core gameplay experience that developer Harebrained Schemes has given us for three years now, but it makes up for it with a quality tactical RPG that's challenging, well-written, and filled with memorable visuals and audio. What it lacks in new features it makes up for in improving old ones, such as a better experiences in the Matrix as well as improved interface options.

It seems that the developers from Harebrained Schemes actually did their homework, because Shadowrun: Hong Kong turns out to be significantly better than Shadowrun Returns.

If you've been round the neon block a few times already, then Hong Kong's going to feel pretty familiar, despite being perfectly solid and having a few new toys plus a wider, more ostentatious stage than ever before. This might well be what you want, of course, but speaking as someone who isn't here first and foremost for the love of the setting, I'm not entirely sure all those Kickstarter funbucks have been spent quite as effectively as they could have been.
