Star Renegades is a fantastic addition to the Roguelite genre. The title's amazing animations complement the fantastic battle system that, in all honesty, had me thinking about my actions more than any strategy game has done in the past. The complex battle system feels incredibly rewarding, especially when you win a battle just by the skin of your teeth. I've never truly enjoyed a Roguelite before but Star Renegades has made me a fan.

Star Renegades doesn’t countenance mistakes, while demanding an inordinate amount of commitment from its players due to its mechanically dense system. This can be a challenging game to get into, from learning about its intricate turn-based combat, to making sense of the walls of text, numbers and symbols it throws at you. Those patient enough to familiarise themselves with what this roguelike has to offer, however, may find this to be a tactically satisfying experience.

Star Renegades deserves to be in the conversation of the best games of 2020 that you’ve never heard of. Like a lot of indies, its primary sales pitch is how it fuses ideas from a bunch of popular and well-respected releases, but it succeeds where many others fail in actually making something inventive and compelling with those borrowed ideas. At its best, Star Renegades is a gorgeous, deep, challenging, and thoroughly gripping release that successfully delivers a fun and enjoyable experience. There are some technical issues that hold it back from perfection, but there’s little else here that otherwise feels...

This is a fun, fresh take on classic JRPG tropes and modern roguelike design, but it needs more to sustain interest from run to run.

The roguelike genre is one of my favourites of all time. If done right, with an addictive gameplay loop, a good roguelike game could last dozens of hours, if not mode. The recently released Hades and Othercide are great showcases for the genre. Star Renegades, the latest game from Raw Fury and Massive Damage, comes really close to joining the all-stars of the genre, but sadly, it doesn’t quite hit the landing.

A tactical RPG that hops between genres and dimensions alike.

So yeah, it has more than a bit of roughness to it. But hoo boy, do I admire its spirit, its extra-ness, its enthusiasm for small-scale RPG design. It feels like somebody put a lasso around the neck of a snorting Disgaea game and corralled it into a pen with Slay The Spire, the resulting gamefoal erupting onto Steam in slime and wires, a cybernetic child of chaos, pixel art, and giant JRPG word flashes. BREAK. BLEEDING. ANTIMATTER. ENRAGED. By design it lacks the streamlined beauty of the turn-based tacticka that has spoiled us recently. I doubt I’ll be replaying...

Massive Damage’s Star Renegades is a really solid roguelite, despite lackluster campaign elements. The combat system forces players to outsmart their opponents, rather than simply beat them to the punch and is also anchored by a robust adversary system. There’s plenty to see with the world itself, as the pixelated art style, vibrant colors, and various environments work together to make a vast series of game worlds. Star Renegades is a great offering from Massive Damage and Raw Fury.

Star Renegades had me enamored from the opening cutscene and sunk its claws deep with its tactically-sound combat, incredible aesthetic, pulse-pounding soundtrack, great story elements, and superb writing. I wish that its meta progression elements were more significant and that it didn’t insist on being yet another rogue-lite, but I still felt compelled - even after some really sour defeats - to come back and fight the good fight against the Imperium.

Star Renegades is one of the most gorgeous pixel art games you can currently play and has a turn-based combat system whose twists do keep you engaged. Learning what heroes excel at and how to combine them to disable and destroy opponents feels great and its Adversaries and Behemoths have their moments. At the same time, this system doesn’t manage to spawn quite enough notable opponents and repetition becomes a little too prevalent, especially given how you have to start over from scratch and go through the same environments and much of the same enemy types with each restart. Its...

A great looking '2DX' pixel art roguelike, though it feels a little thin.

Star Renegades is a perfect hybrid of a tactical RPG and roguelite battling system, with easy to comprehend mechanics. As you level so does the enemy, making the threat ever increasing and prominent throughout the whole playthrough. The unique maps with boundless variations sprawling over three varying planets will keep you coming back for more. The breathtaking visuals are more than enough reason to play this game and fight against the Imperium!

Star Renegades is, at its core, a tactical rogue-lite RPG that’s laden with well thought out systems, a varied cast and a beautiful world. It’s an addictive foray across a range of planets in which you lead a bunch of misfits into battle against malevolent enemy forces. It’s a thinker's game; a game where you need meticulous planning and a well considered approach in each battle, and I had a blast with it. Star Renegades is a delight and one that you definitely shouldn’t sleep on.
