State of Decay’s ambition reaches farther than most $60 titles, so its value is unquestionable as a $20 download – especially given how it manages to successfully meet so many of its lofty goals. I spent about 12 hours in this Zed-infested world, and while I saw most of what’s there, I could’ve spent a few more hours exploring. And since I focused on melee weapons the first time, I fully plan to start another game with a gun-centric character. State of Decay is ugly. It looks ugly, and in many ways it plays ugly. However, there’s a simple beauty underneath the frightful veneer, one that surrounds a compelling, interesting, complex, and enslaving little game. There is absolutely more to this game than meets the eye, and despite the overwhelming amount of zombie games vying for our attention, this is certainly one I’m glad to see in the world.

With everything that’s good about this title, there are a few issues that can be frustrating. Framerate drops during heavy sequences are a big setback when facing many enemies at once, impacting reaction time and ultimately a character’s survival. There are a some technical glitches here and there, which can be as simple as characters walking through objects, to enemies completely dropping out of the landscape.

State of Decay is an indie game with big ambitions, chief of which is to deliver the ultimate zombie apocalypse simulator. Dropped into a huge sandbox world overrun with the undead, a handful of other survivors and limited resources, you and your (hopefully) growing group of battlers must strive to survive – and even thrive – through a series of story and randomly generated missions.
