While it will only take you a few hours to beat SteamWorld Dig, it's a game that makes every moment count. There is no filler, only excellent content to be experienced. Whether it is a player's first or sixth time playing through SteamWorld Dig, they are in for an absolute treat. This is one platform game that should not be missed.

At just a day’s worth of entertainment, SteamWorld Dig feels light. Yet, that time will be spent in glee, as its spaced out gameplay elements drive the action down into the digging depths, searching and uncovering more and more, to play in more varied ways. It will astonish, now and then again, but then nevermore. It is, however, definitely worth the thrilling ride of helping Rusty’s plight, as the robot grows into a machine of the ages with more powers at hand to crush soil and foes alike.

Steamworld Dig is a fun game, but it's pretty short and can get repetitive after a while.

I admit that I felt pretty fed up with the game on a number of occasions precisely because of these shortcomings. Even so, the allure of what lay hidden beneath the surface compelled me onward. Soil gives way to a long-lost subterranean civilization, which then gives way to evidence of a world much more advanced then the one on the surface. Every hundred meters is some new surprise, some new revelation.

SteamWorld Dig is an addictive mining platformer deserving of the praise it gets. I’m furious with myself for not picking up this gem earlier, and guilty that I got it at half price. Following its purchase during Black Friday, I’ve been playing it nonstop and at a furious pace. I can still feel the curve of the 3DS in my hands even after I set it down to go about my day. I’m well aware the game released in 2013 and that I’m four years late to the party, but as the saying goes, it’s better late than never.

SteamWorld Dig is a genuine surprise; I hadn’t expected to find such a fantastic indie title on the 3DS eShop, but I’m extremely glad I did. It’s easy to see that the developers, Image & Form, have put a lot of love and care into this game, delivering one of the best indie titles this year, completely worth the asking price of £7.99.
