No game makes exploring the stars as mind-blowingly fascinating as Stellaris. This 4X spacefaring game was first released in 2016 for PC and since then continued to evolve, refine, and improve itself. But finally, the galactic-sized strategy game is on consoles too, bringing the often overlooked genre to a whole new audience.
Stellaris, a 4X/grand strategy game set in space, hit the shelves at a sweet spot in between Endless Space releases. Meeting a surprisingly starved market, Stellaris rapidly gained a huge player base, relatively speaking. Years later, it’s attempting to do the ill-advised, if not impossible—port to consoles a real-time-strategy game originally made for PC.
Stellaris: Console Edition is a solid port of what is easily Paradox Interactive's most accessible grand strategy game. While Stellaris has evolved and grown over the past three years on PC, the base game is still a good solid grand strategy title with some intriguing ideas for storytelling and managing an endgame, though without some of the depth of their other titles. It still suffers greatly from a frustrating mid-game but if you've got the itch to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate on a console this will scratch it.
A slick PC to console port that stands proudly on its own two feet/tentacles — Stellaris is a fine example of grand strategy that melts away hours upon hours of your time in a haze of deadly supernovas, hypervelocity railguns and diplomacy through gritted teeth.
Conquering the galaxy and discovering its deepest secrets with a controller in hand is a much better experience than I would have thought possible for this type of game. Thanks to extensive customization and its liberating play-your-own-way attitude, Stellaris: Console Edition is the most fun you can have with a space 4X game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 right now. That said, if you have a PC that can run Stellaris on decent settings, there’s really no question that you should prefer that over Console Edition. At least until it has time to catch up with the major feature changes that over a ye...
