Whether or not Super Bomberman R succeeds in reviving one of gaming’s previously much-loved franchises remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure, if you’ve ever been fond of strategically dropping bombs to flummox your opponents, it’s a winner. Visually it has charm, and its soundtrack teeters on the line between repetitive and infectiously catchy. It’s the gameplay that’s the real hook though, and there’s plenty of it as long as you have friends to play with. If you don’t, well, you’ll find Super Bomberman R rather limited.

Bomberman R‘s sound is exciting for the most part, with a few tracks that start to wear on you as time goes on. The voice acting stands out thanks to the cheesiness that fills every line. It’s clear that the voice actors were having a lot of fun with their lines, as the ridiculous voices and dialogue fits the tone of the game perfectly. A lot of the songs pump you up and make matches feel fast and furious, but there are a few tracks that are both short and annoying, such as the main menu theme, meaning the endless...

Super Bomberman R doesn't reinvent the wheel and might be hard to recommend to most players due to a lack of value. Its greatest strength is in its local multiplayer capabilities, but a combination of finicky controls, a high price tag for the amount of content the game packs, and a mediocre online experience holds back an otherwise fun game.

Super Bomberman R is a smart Nintendo Switch launch title, especially given it’s only one of very few exclusive retail releases available for the newest console on the market. Taking the classic Bomberman formula and making it accessible on a platform that can be played portably and easily with friends in tabletop mode makes a lot of sense, but the price tag is a little too hefty to recommend it wholeheartedly.

Like many others, I remember Bomberman fondly as a hectic multiplayer experience that centers around defeating your enemies with bombs. You can imagine my excitement when I found out a new Bomberman title was making its way alongside the Nintendo Switch launch. Enter Super Bomberman R. What does the R stand for, you ask? Well, according to the Konami Social Media Team, the R symbolizes a return and rebirth as the game is meant to be a bit of a homage to older Bomberman titles, as well as “Rangers”, referring to the Bomberman characters that patrol the galaxy. With the...

Until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ships in April, there’s really no better competitive game on the Switch, and if old school action games like this are your cup of tea, then Super Bomberman R is definitely for you. If instead you’re looking for a meaty single player experience, I’d suggest that one Zelda game everyone seems so keen on, I Am Setsuna, or Shovel Knight.

I think Bomberman is cool and cute, but this title is not the launch that the Nintendo Switch deserved. By either offering more new content or pricing the game reasonably, Konami could have jump started the Bomberman franchise, which has been MIA for years. Instead, Super Bomberman R just doesn't give the value or the fun that the price commands. Instead, you're better off saving up an extra $10 and buying The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you already have a copy, you might want to think about just buying a second one instead of this title....

Super Bomberman R’s multiplayer versatility and boss-filled story mode are laudable retreads of classic gameplay, but its depth and customizability are disappointing. By contrast, the aforementioned Bomberman Live was a brilliant, fully featured Bomberman for Xbox 360 that came out 10 years ago, and it only cost $10. It’s reasonable to expect a bit more from a $50 Bomberman game in 2017.

Classic Bomberman titles are known for delivering fast-paced action that is best appreciated in a multiplayer setting. Super Bomberman R tries to follow in those footsteps, but it does not achieve the same level of entertainment. This entry relies too heavily on the existing formula for success, and when it does attempt to expand on what worked in the past, it fails to do so in meaningful or memorable ways.

Super Bomberman R is a great return to Bomberman, but doesn't push the series forward.

Though it is a little light on content, Super Bomberman R scratches the retro itch for hectic action. Voice repetition is a bit of a turnoff, but the charm and multiplayer focus help to make up for it. If you and your friends like purely chaotic action with up to eight players, Super Bomberman R might be right up your alley. If you aren’t investing in extra controllers, you might want to nab this after a price adjustment.

Bomberman itself is still a classic, and works very well on the Switch, but the insanely high price makes this impossible to recommend.

And that’s it. It’s Bomberman, man. It feels like an arcade game with a $50 price tag. The campaign isn’t as strong as it could be, but there’s enough here to keep the series going until Konami can muster up a little more for the next iteration.

For the price, Super Bomberman R is a tough sell. It does deliver on the promise of a return to the classic multiplayer that we all love. And the Switch is starving for content, as all newly launched systems do. If you really love Bomberman's signature multiplayer, or if you really have to have a new Switch game, then Super Bomberman R will serve its purpose. If you want a full, content-rich experience then you'll want to wait for something else.
