Professional reviews from gaming critics
We’re back in high school, and the world is in shambles. World peace has been achieved through the power and accessibility of self-help books, and then lost again to corruption and evil. Students and faculty are disappearing from the dreary halls of Water Falls High School and textbooks have turned into black market commodities. The classrooms are on lockdown and nobody knows what to do. Enter: Daryl.
Humour is a tough aspect for games to get right, but Super Daryl Deluxe nails its dry, surrealist American-indie tone. Despite the inherent repetition of the RPGvania match-up, the writing, graphical style, and imagination that Dan & Gary Games have packed in here mark it out as a wonderfully weird indie gem.
However, Super Daryl Deluxe is fantastic despite those minor inconveniences. The story becomes increasingly strange, the locations increasingly surreal, and the dialogue increasingly funny. I can’t say I’ve played too many games like this, and I’m very happy to have had the opportunity.

Super Daryl Deluxe is a trippy brawler mixed with role-playing progression that takes place in the weirdest high school to ever exist. Players take on the role of Daryl, a teenager that makes Napoleon Dynamite look like Rico Suave by comparison. Rather than beating up a bunch of school kids, the game has players venturing into magical realms that feature historical figures that are being taught about. Thus, it’s not uncommon to come across Georgia O’Keeffe in one room and then Beethoven in the next. It’s wonderfully weird.
There’s so much passion on display here. The two guys who created this were definitely onto something, and I’ll be there day one for whatever they cook up next.

Retro-inspired 2D action games are plentiful on digital storefronts, so it can be difficult for them to distinguish themselves from their competition. With a distinct art style, wacky humor, and role-playing elements galore, Super Daryl Deluxe immediately stands out from the crowd. While the journey is enjoyable and features plenty of novel ideas, frustration and uneven design drag the experience down on a regular basis.
