Boss battles are a low point, jumping isn’t always the best in execution, and some may be disheartened that their favorite party game was cut. Regardless, Banana Blitz HD is the definitive version of an era of Monkey Ball that desperately needs to make a comeback by either remaking the original two games or a creating new entry altogether. This is one of those instances where the quality of life improvements are noticeable, and it’s worth your money being able to play it on the go at all.

Super Monkey Ball series is back and we go over what makes Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD remaster a fun game for fans of the series.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD isn't a perfect recreation of the original game due to some things being improved and others being taken away. The overall presentation is more enjoyable when it comes to the main game, but the massive drop-off in mini-game selection hurts the replay value. With revamped controls, it plays better than the motion control-only Wii original -- but improvements weren't taken far enough. Camera improvements would make the boss battles more enjoyable and motion controls as an option on Switch wouldn't hurt things either. Visually, the HD visuals are a nice upgrade from the Wii, but the reworked soundtrack isn't as impressive as the original game's. Still, if you haven't played Blitz, this is the best overall way to do it -- as long as you can mainly enjoy the series for its regular stages and don't mind the lack of a lot of mini-games.

Super Monkey Ball is one of the more modern Sega franchises I’ve always been curious about, but never got the chance to play. It’s not like I didn’t have the consoles those games were being released for, but there was always something else that was grabbing my attention, be it on Gamecube, Wii, or any other system. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, a remaster of the one of the Wii’s original launch titles, is the first game in the franchise I’ve ever played.

Overall, Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz is a success. Personally I could take it or leave it and for $30 I would leave it. However, the game did what it was supposed to do: entertain. Beyond the frustration of the games attempted use of the Vita's features I thoroughly enjoyed the race against the clock. The game is an integral part of your PlayStation Vita collection if you are a long time fan of Super Monkey Ball or simply a fan of puzzle games.

If this had been the first time Monkey Ball had graced our consoles it probably wouldn't have been so disappointing, but it would also be a series that few people would care about.

A welcome revival of a much-loved franchise, although Banana Blitz was never the best entry and Sega has had to accept too many compromises in porting it from the Wii.

If you’re an ardent Super Monkey Ball fan then you might want to pick up Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, but you probably won’t be having the best time of your life with it. It’s a shame that Super Monkey Ball Deluxe hasn’t been given the remaster treatment instead, which amalgamated all the levels from the original Super Monkey Ball and its sequel as well as adding in a smattering of original stages for PS2 and Xbox. That was the ultimate Super Monkey Ball game, and it still is. The new additions here detract from the experience rather than enrich it.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD is a respectable entry into its series. The gameplay is as fun as ever, but camera issues and brevity keep it from becoming a true classic.

Sega's Super Monkey Ball franchise is full of arcade-style fun but this remake doesn't quite live up to the original Wii installment.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD provides glimpses of the greatness but these are few and far between in a game that struggles to find a solid difficulty curve and provide much else outside of the core 100 stages.

After spending time with Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, I’m still confused as to why this specific game was the pick to revive the franchise. The 10 mini-games included aren’t that strong and the main game is mediocre at best, dragged down by the motion-focused level design and abysmal boss battles. On one hand, I was happy to play Super Monkey Ball again, but on the other, I wish I could play a better Super Monkey Ball game.

I’ll admit it. I was a proud card-carrying Nintendo Wii fanboy. As such, I felt it was my moral obligation to show as much love to the console’s launch lineup as humanly possible. Part of blind support was my purchase of Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, which, oddly enough, wasn’t anywhere near as terrible as I anticipated. When I learned the game was being ported to modern consoles, I was left a bit perplexed. This was far from what I would classify as a classic, yet for some reason Sega felt the need to bestow this upon the PS4 audience. Can this HD reimagining recapture some of the magic of my admittedly rose-colored memories, or is this less a case of “why not?” and more a case of “why bother?”

I really wish Sega would have released HD remakes of Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 instead of Banana Blitz. There are some elements of a good game here, but many of the design decisions for this Wii launch title don't really feel that great in 2019. The game is less welcoming to new players as its predecessors, and the Main Game campaign mode feels disjointed with uninspired and annoying boss battles. I wanted to like this game, as I am a huge fan of the franchise, but this banana does not pass the smell test.

When I noticed Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD at PAX this year, I was cautiously curious. I’ve never played a Super Monkey Ball game. Not with good reason either, it’s just not something that ever really crossed my mind. The series never appeared on my radar nor anyone else in my gaming circle, remaining one of those games whose iconography was vivid but whose name I could never identify if questioned.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD has a novel concept, but the incredibly fidgety camera puts a ghastly stain on the overall package.
