Tales of Xillia Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

The latest installment in Namco Bandai's long-running JRPG series sets a number of fantastic examples for other developers to learn from -- and is quite simply a marvellous game in its own right, too.

Tales of Xillia never strays terribly far from the formula set forth by its predecessors. Firmly rooted in the past, it instead introduces a selection of new elements and subtle enhancements that make it feel refreshing while still very familiar. The story and characters are delightful, and an engaging battle system rounds out a mesmeric package. Simply put, Tales of Xillia is one of the finest role-playing games in recent memory.

And so they jump from town to town, indulging in a couple of side quests to help citizens with their individual concerns while tracking towards the next major conflict on their road to the final boss. A couple of hours in the game introduces a sinister mystery and this, naturally, is intended to keep driving players forward to figure out what is really going on.

Last but not least, you have the addictive, Quick, and deceivingly simple fighting system. A smash brothers-like attack scheme, unique character style that make it worth trying every character, linking with other party members for tag team super moves and unique benefits, chaining those super moves, easy and quick party switching mid match and trying to use each skill you unlocked in the Lillium orb effectively, are all things to learn while going through the game, with all the side quests and other content in the game, you have plenty of time to learn.
