Tandem: A Tale of Shadows Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is a pleasure to play through, leaving the burning desire to learn what’s next and a storm of emotions and feelings as the game’s storyline reaches its conclusion.

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is a fun and clever puzzle game, but the story falls quite a bit flat with a pretty dark ending. The puzzles themselves are enjoyable with needing to switch between Emma's and Fenton's perspectives a nice mechanic. The story though is just there and while puzzle games don't need stories to be enjoyable, if you're going to have one at least flesh things out a bit. If you don't mind a story that covers just the bare essentials needed to have a story, Tandem's puzzles are pretty enjoyable and I'd recommend checking the game out at some point.

A nice entry in the puzzle/platformer genre here, from the development team at Monochrome Paris. Tandem – A Tale Of Shadows follows a long and illustrious

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is a puzzle-platformer all about light and shadows. You play as two characters, a little girl named Emma and a teddy bear named Fenton who seems to exist in the two different dimensions. They need to constantly work in tandem to help each other progress in their own worlds. The game’s mechanics manage to be unique and visually interesting while remaining quite familiar for puzzle vets.

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is Monochrome Paris’ console debut. The team has previously created plenty of VR experiences for clients like Adidas, as well as a PC VR shooter called Singularity 5. With a console debut, the studio has gone in a completely different direction with this puzzle platformer. The shadowy world certainly wears its influences on its sleeve all the way through to the strange story that kicks everything off.

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows blends a spooky story with a cute art style to create a game that blurs the lines of physics. It plays with the concept of the puzzle

Tandem: A Tale of Two Shadows does a good enough job at executing its well thought out premise. But, it isn't the revolution in puzzle games it purports to be.

Even if we didn’t exactly have an actual E3 event this year, that doesn’t mean we weren’t able to preview a few games last June. One of the games I had the chance of testing out back then was Monochrome Paris’ Tandem: A Tale of Shadows. A game that’s an innovative take on puzzle solving via platforming and perspective shifting, all set in a Tim Burton inspired “gothic fairytale” background. I did enjoy that demo for what it was, despite a few gripes, which made me look forward t...

Revelling in an eerie Tim Burton-esque style, Tandem: A Tale of Two Shadows, developed by Monochrome Paris, uses its surreal and detailed design to create visually unique puzzles that force you to utilize the entirety of each level. Steadily introducing new ideas across the 5 different regions—the Gardens, Boiler Room, Clockwork, Kitchen and Greenhouse—Tandem keeps you interested through its innovation but struggles to fully realise its potential.

As long as you go into Tandem: A Tale of Shadows not expecting a riveting tale or a high level of polish, chances are you’ll have an enjoyable time with it. As puzzles games go, it doesn’t feel entirely original – Shady Part of Me offered a somewhat similar experience earlier in the year – but there’s enough here to keep those who like to put their thinking caps on entertained for a fair while.

In spite of a unique aesthetic and passable puzzles, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows struggles to keep itself exciting. The almost complete lack of narrative thrust and droning gameplay progression drag it down from the moment it begins, and its failure to capitalize on its more attention-grabbing elements guarantees a disappointing experience out of a game that could have easily been more.
