The DioField Chronicle is an interesting JRPG with a unique story to the genre. The game runs beautifully on the Steam Deck, though cinematic cutscene slowdowns and some very minor controller gripes do exist.

The DioField Chronicle is a great real-time strategy game for consoles. It controls well, the stages aren’t too long, and there’s enough mechanical depth to make stage replays interesting. Although I couldn’t be bothered with the game’s story, the scenes themselves don’t last long and all of it can be skipped at any point. I would have liked some more quality-of-life features such as always-on enemy range marking, but what’s missing hardly impacts the gameplay. This is a game I can recommend to tactics and JRPG fans alike.

The DioField Chronicle provides an engaging and refreshing real time tactical battle system. That will be enough for fans of tactical RPGs, but the bland story unfortunately can't keep up with its stellar gameplay.

The DioField Chronicle is a unique strategy RPG that tries something truly new in the genre, even if it stumbles a bit along the way.

When a band of warriors rescues a young woman from a carriage, you wouldn’t expect a story of political intrigue and complex character motivations. But The DioField Chronicle does its best to tell a political story interspersed with an engaging combat system. Complexity fills every aspect of this game, and it succeeds in making you think about the story as well as your next move. Unfortunately, that complexity is a double-edged sword. The DioField Chronicle doesn’t stop being complex, whi...

Titles like The DioField Chronicle usually falter based on whether or not they have good stories, but it's quite the opposite in this case. The boring story is disappointing, but the combat is so enjoyable it's easy to forget about. Each map feels creative and diverse so there's not too much repeat. It's truly a shame the story couldn't power through to ultimately make an impact, but there's hope here for some other title to use a similar combat style with a better focus on understanding a more engaging story. The DioField Chronicle will not be for everyone, but those...

There aren't many RTS games on console so it's always a delight to check new ones out; thankfully, The DioField Chronicle is pretty cool.

Sure enough with its relatively simplistic challenge, brisk battles and unspectacular presentation, The DioField Chronicle will likely struggle to find an audience among the burgeoning throng of armchair generals looking for their next tactical fix. For everyone else however who would like to a dip a toe or two in those genre waters, The DioField Chronicle is the sort of easily accessible, dip-in/dip-out tactical RPG that you need in your life right now.

The DioField Chronicle's real-time strategy combat will appeal to genre fans with its freshness, but it's let down by significant flaws in both gameplay and storytelling that hamper the experience.

The DioField Chronicle feels like it’s been sent to die as some mega-niche undertaking, but it’s nevertheless a pleasingly experimental tactical RPG adventure.

The DioField Chronicle delivers a unique real-time spin on the usual tactics RPG experience, but it's marred by a boring story, unlikable characters, and inconsistent presentation. While the one saving grace is the addictive and always rewarding combat, missions fail to deliver the evolution or variety that some might expect. Overall, it's an interesting game, but not an altogether great one.

Its stunning real-time battles with tactical pause are packed with drama and visual flourishes, but The DioField Chronicle's convoluted story and deeply questionable cast hold it back from true greatness.

Boring library trips aside, I’d rather have only vocal work during cutscenes and have to read most text than endure the neverending string of grunts and chuckles, or worse, Waltaquin’s insane cackle. If you skip through most dialogue, vaguely pay attention to the story, and focus on the intensely enjoyable combat encounters, then the game’s 25-hour runtime is well worth it. The combat itself is good enough to serve as the basis of an entire DioField franchise if Square Enix is so inclined, and it's memorable enough that I could see this game becoming a cult classic.

The DioField Chronicle has proved to be quite the surprise. Its story isn’t the most riveting out there, but it is interesting, with a cast of characters whose motives aren’t always clear. But what carries it are its battles, which are enjoyably deep but not bogged down in complexity or length. They’re fun and engaging, challenging you to think and act fast while making use of the skills available to you. Everything comes together to create one of Square Enix’s most enjoyable RPGs in some time, with a combat system that we hope we haven’t seen the last of.

“The DioField Chronicle includes a lot of setup for potential sequels, but it does a solid job of laying down the proper foundation to make that work long-term.”

The real-time strategy battles are an innovative aspect of the game that I'd love to see adapted in more RPGs, and while I do wish the protagonists weren't as cookie-cutter as they come, I'll take bland stories and pretty art over boring gameplay any day.

I've started writing this review several times now. The first time, it was just some rambling about how Square Enix has turned into something like early-days Ubisoft, co-developing or publishing everything they can get their hands on. However, Square Enix mostly sticks to JRPG-ish things, which I certainly approve of. The second time I talked about how The DioField Chronicle (which Francesco previewed not too long ago) made me think of the Koei Tecmo game Bladestorm. Then we have a mixture of the starts before finally getting this, which is me just rambling about how I can't start this review...
