The Outlast Trials takes that first-person horror experience we’ve come to know from the franchise and transforms it. Players become part of the game in a way they’ve never been able to before. The Outlast games have always been known to push the barrier with players enduring visceral experiences as they delve into terrifying conspiracies. We were lucky enough to check this one out in early access last year, so has the game progressed now it’s fully released and available on console? Wi...

The Outlast Trials sticks with a strong foundation that hasn't changed much since Early Access.

Ultimately, The Outlast Trials finds itself in a bit of an awkward spot. It doesn’t quite hit the mark as a single player game, though playing alone is where the true horror lies. Play it with others, and while you’re likely to have more fun, it comes at the expense of atmosphere and scares. For many though, repetition is likely to be the biggest issue with The Outlast Trials; sneaking around in the dark is only fun for so long, after all. Still, that’s not to say this experiment is a total failure — it has a lot to offer...

It's time. The Outlast Trials has finally come out of Early Access, and we now have a different beast to address compared to how the game was before. For those who read my first impressions of The Outlast Trials, some of the issues I have with the game extend to the way the Stamina system was implemented, the repetitive nature of the game, the somewhat awful and unoriginal game design, and the way it emphasized the Rigs which exist to amplify your abilities.

Based on an actually scary and not entirely fictitious tale – it’s easy to spot some influences here and there, minus the supernatural elements – The Outlast Trials is an unexpected but successful entry in one of the best horror series of the last decade. If you are wary of the multiplayer focus, don’t be, as these trials are great for atmospheric solo runs and gruesome sights that are not for the faint of heart, so do yourself a favor and become a human guinea pig if you like shocking experiences.

At times, it does feel like Outlast Trials is trying too hard to be shocking. It soon becomes less frightening and more silly. The sadistic mutants become predictable but this doesn't detract from the fun of it all. When playing with a team you get a unique experience I haven't had with other multiplayer horror games.

The Outlast Trials takes Saw's death traps and combines them with illegal government experiments in a shocking first foray into multiplayer for the series.

The Outlast Trials captures the gritty and often dark atmosphere of the series in an over-the-top, unique multiplayer experience and a must-play for fans of the horror genre.

The Outlast Trials is a fun, but flawed addition to the Outlast series, trading in the original titles’ claustrophobic horror for in-your-face multiplayer mayhem. The title’s core gameplay loop offers a thrilling challenge and high replayability, delivering plenty of trials for fans to sink their teeth into across its Core, Advanced, and Ultra Programs, with immersive audio-visual elements that deliver on all fronts. Unfortunately, The Outlast Trials' balancing issues, unjustified gratuity, and complete lack of scares may leave some players disappointed. Fans of the Outlast series will likely find plenty of reasons to explore and overcome the Murkoff Corporation’s various...

As a player, a lot of what’s on the table with The Outlast Trials ain’t for me. The prospect of time investment for a survival horror-style game combined with the Fortnite-style game loop makes my brain hurt. But I understand why it works for the folks who are down, and looking at those sickos having a great time in the Early Access version is a vicarious sort of fun you can have from the critic’s position. I don’t enjoy it, but I “get” it, and being able to see the enjoyment elsewhere helps wrap my head around the game holistically...

There was raucous laughter throughout the sessions, even when it ends in abject failure, and of course come round two and beyond, teams can become far more organised. Further sessions reduce that fear of being ‘the hunted’ further, and then it really does become an escape room in all but name – yes, it can be gruesome, yes, there are jump scares, but it’s still a bloody good laugh with friends, and in a world lacking genuinely new ideas, I’ve got to give Red Barrels credit for doing something seriously cool, in a unique and very “Outlast” kind of way.

Converting a traditionally single player IP into one meant for multiplayer too is a process with just as many hits as there are misses, so developer Red Barrels will be delighted it's landed on the right side of history. With up to three friends along for the ride, The Outlast Trials is a slightly different ballgame to its offline counterparts, but it retains enough horror to appeal to those fans picked up through entries past.

The Outlast Trials is a diabolical parade of terrors, riffing off the cult series to provide a chilling online multiplayer PvE experience that doubles as a prequel. With new maps and missions added as it leaves Early Access, Red Barrels makes a strong opening case for its live service horror game – but has yet to prove how this nightmare will keep us coming back for more than a one-off dose of shock therapy.

It’s probably for the best, though, because if Mother Gooseberry and her sinister duck puppet have anything to say about it, my dental hygiene will be top-notch in no time.

The Outlast Trials is a cool idea, a spin-off that funnels players through a gauntlet of twisted levels with a gameshow/Saw movie vibe. However, as good as it all looks and sounds, with plenty of levels and tons of customisation to dig into, the core gameplay here is just way too bland and repetitive, it's in no way scary, and the only real fun to be had is in getting a bunch of pals together to laugh at your misfortunes and all of the violence that ensues.

The Outlast Trials is excessive and frantically enjoyable - but can occasionally tip over into frustration more than fear.

Despite its focus on co-op, The Outlast Trials presents a strong early showing through its early access release. It runs well, has an interesting setting and story, and the co-op can be incredibly fun if you play it with the right group. The only downside is that jump scares might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
