The Silver Case Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
It’s hard to categorically call The Silver Case a “good game”, in the traditional sense. It’s mechanics are out-dated by more than a decade, its story and plot are hard to understand, and it feels out of place in every moment. At the same time, however, it uses those detractions positively. It’s a testament to Suda51’s unique approach to design, becoming a wholly engrossing tale with a cast of odd characters. It can be crude, vulgar and horrifying in every possible way. The way you interpret these moments will be dependent on your own investment in the game itself. It’s an experience that is e...
The Silver Case is a rare breed of game that is a breath of fresh air in today's gaming landscape. The gameplay elements are somewhat rigid, but fans of gritty crime dramas or Suda51's distinct style will find a lot to like here.
The Silver Case tells a fascinating murder mystery tale in a way only Suda 51 himself could. If you like visual novels give it a shot, but if you want good gameplay look elsewhere.
Before earning a cult following with over-the-top action games like Killer7, No More Heroes, and Shadows of the Damned, Goichi Suda and Grasshopper Manufacture made more subdued (but still strange) adventure games. The Silver Case was the first of those, and it delivers on what fans waiting for a translation of the game for 18 years have wanted. It has a strong, unique look, intriguing characters and dialogue, and a story as engaging as it is confusing. The Silver Case has trouble pulling all of the threads together, but it still has the surreal atmosphere and unique storytelling that are Suda...
Many know Goichi Suda or Suda51 for his work on titles such as Killer7 or No More Heroes but his popularity in Japan originally started with his company’s first title, The Silver Case. The game, which was originally released in Japan for the PlayStation in 1999, never made it to international audiences until it was remastered and released for the PC last year. A PS4 release was then announced in October of last year which would feature a new remixed soundtrack (including two brand new tracks) and two new story scenarios set after the original story.
Suda51 fan's, unite! The Silver Case, the cult-developer's first title from the PSX era, comes to U.S. consoles for the first time in a remastered and expanded edition. A visual novel with graphic crime content and supernatural undertones, The Silver Case grants players a rare chance to see the beginnings of a great game-maker, and experience one of the strangest visual novels ever to grace the genre.
A weird trip back down Suda51's timeline.
