A challenging puzzle platformer exploring the subject of depression in a thoughtful way.
The Thin Silence has a satisfying, creative approach to puzzle solving, alongside a sad story told in equally sad snippets. Though you can reset puzzles and try again as often as you need, you might sometimes still be left at a loss.
Telling a story has never been particularly easy. If the theme is vague or the scope too broad, people have trouble connecting with it. At the same time an overly personal story can have the same effect, and what resonates for the writer becomes too narrow to engage the audience. So, at what point does a story become too personal? The Thin Silence attempts to walk that line, telling an emotional and deeply personal tale while capturing the attention of the wider world. While the narrative itself is well done, the gameplay upon which it rests is, ironically, somewhat thin.
The story was easily the best aspect of the game and makes it worth playing through on its own. The gameplay was enjoyable, giving a variety of challenges and puzzle types to complete through the journey.
The Thin Silence felt tedious at first because I was lacking motivation to continue. As soon as I learnt enough about Ezra to become invested, I very much wanted to move on, but at times it felt like a game I was playing in spite of myself. With 5-6 hours it’s by no means a long game and can easily serve as a distraction after a long day of work as long as you can stomach the dark themes. The fact that you spend long periods of time in complete silence and learn absolutely nothing without putting a significant amount of work in can be very frustrating and only feels partly intentional.
