Toukiden: Kiwami Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

But the true value of Toukiden, and now Kiwami, is the sheer respect and love for Japanese heritage that drips through its atmosphere. From the Torii structures, through to the dual-tailed Tenko foxes, Toukiden is every bit the artefact of history and culture that Omega Force’s other games, such as Dynasty Warriors and Bladestorm, have traditionally excelled at. Toukiden is an artful, intelligent Monster Hunter ‘clone,’ and Koei Tecmo is on to a winner with this franchise.

Overall, Toukiden: Kiwami is a great game that is marred by repetition. With a huge amount of missions and quests to complete, as well as weapons and Mitama to acquire, there’s well over 60 hours worth of entertainment to be had. No other game on the Playstation 4 or Vita offers what this game has: epic battles against gargantuan beasts. Whilst the Japanese dialogue and repetitive nature of the missions will be a barrier for many players, those who look past these hurdles will find a massively enjoyable and highly rewarding experience. Those that have played the original Toukiden: Age of Demon...

Toukiden: The Age of Demons attempted to fill a Monster Hunter-shaped hole on the PlayStation Vita, and it succeeded to quite an impressive degree. Accessible combat and relatively simple crafting systems made it a decent alternative to Capcom's popular action role-playing game romp, but Toukiden: Kiwami's gone one better, providing an experience that really shines on Sony's handheld device.

This excellent game is far more than a simple port.

Toukiden: Kiwami adds on to an already good game with more content, more gameplay variety, and some proper multiplayer that really rounds out this package.

If I had one major complaint about the game it’d be the inability to visit the blacksmith while playing online. This is a mind boggling exclusion and makes me wonder why they didn’t bother to implement it in Kiwami. The whole point of playing with others online is to hunt monsters together, craft some new gear if possible, and then move on to the next monster. Having to quit the lobby you’re in just to even go check the blacksmith is ridiculous and basically forces you to have to either leave the lobby you’re in or continue in it with possibly low level gear.

Toukiden: Kiwami scratches an itch I didn’t even know I had, and has convinced me of the validity of an entire genre.I never caught on to the “Monster Hunter” genre, the type of games inspired by the insanely popular [...]

Toukiden Kiwami is a solid expansion on Age of Demons, and a reasonable facsimile to Monster Hunter should the 3DS entry not be your bag. But it does need to be treated as the remaster it ultimately is, and really isn’t worth it for veterans.

For some people, that won't be a bad thing. Monster Hunter is notoriously complex and time consuming; true to its mobile roots, Toukiden: Kiwami offers an experience that's best enjoyed in short bursts. Toukiden: Kiwami is like Monster Hunter with training wheels. For players just getting started with hunting games, or those who want a more casual experience, Toukiden delivers hours of monster-bashing fun, but it won't unseat the reigning king of the genre any time soon.

If you’re pining for a Monster Hunter style game on console or simply waiting for Dragon’s Dogma Online or Deep Down to come along, Toukiden Kiwami offers more than just a stopgap. Although still in its infancy, the IP is certainly going places. It will be interesting to see what Omega Force will do next when, hopefully, it decides to launch a sequel.
