Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a super-slick boomer shooter that serves up one of the best Warhammer-themed games we've played thus far. The oppressive vibes and stompy violent silliness of space marines has been recreated faithfully here in a FPS that's every bit as perfectly pitched and polished as the very best recent examples of this rejuvenated genre. We'd have loved to see some multiplayer or different modes to muck around with, yes, but there's no knocking how fast and fun this retro shooter's campaign is. For old-school FPS fans, this is the good stuff.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a must-play for Warhammer fans and a great introduction for newcomers to the series. If you're looking for an intense, action-packed boomer shooter where you get to experience the power fantasy of being a Space Marine, this game is for you.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is an excellent retro shooter that, to both its benefit and detriment, doesn't take risks. The repetitive bosses and poor communication to the player might turn some people away. However, Its tight core gameplay loop is gory and punchy, and it captures the essence of what it feels like to be a space marine in both movement and power.

A fascinating retro shooter that proves a perfect match for the world of Warhammer 40,000 but whose almost complete lack of nuance and variety eventually wears you down.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the kind of game that just feels right. The way it controls, the way you move, everything just feels how you know it should. As someone who’s sunk hundreds of hours into classic DOOM titles, I KNOW how a boomer shooter should feel. While I’ve been excited for Boltgun since it’s announcement, not in 40,000 years did I think it would be this good. That it would feel this natural to play. That it would be more then just another ode to classic DOOM, but instead ...

Blasting the demons of the dark into pixelated piles of bloody mush never felt so good. With a vibrant world, an engaging gameplay loop, and an ever-expanding arsenal of catastrophic weapons at your hands, you, too, will find glory in taking out those pesky demons.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun successfully captures the dark and expansive lore of the Warhammer universe, immersing the player in a grim and pixelated future that will appeal to both fans of the franchise and FPS enthusiasts.

Drenched in retro nostalgia, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a straightforward boomer shooter with a 40K skin. Its minimal story is as bog-standard as Warhammer gets, but is enough to justify the on-screen slaughter, while allowing for a pure focus on satisfying action.

It’s one of those moments where I may have my complaints about the game, and I feel it’s extremely necessary to voice them. However, I also think you should try Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. This isn’t a lukewarm recommendation; it’s a hot one. Because despite all its problems, it’s something that needs to be seen and celebrated. There’s a chance that you won’t even notice the problems I outlined, and this will be a big hit with you. You might not even notice the same issues that I do. I think Boltgun deserves its chance, and you should definitely give it one, even if you have no connection with the license.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is polished and runs perfect, with fast-paced and exciting combat. Gamers that grew up playing 90s FPS games will get a kick out of how much it borrows from Doom, Quake, and the like, but many will tire of the archaic design choices that have been abandoned by modern games. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun represents the best and worst of 90s-era FPS games, so while it has a solid foundation, it fails to deliver truly compelling content to go with it, making the game difficult to recommend to anyone that's not a hardcore Warhammer fan or who isn't desperately nostalgic for the 90s.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a brisk, brutal boomer shooter and another great reason for a visit to Games Workshop’s science fiction theatre.

Couple this unnecessary lack of info on where to go with just how damned hard the game is and it was a chore to get through later levels on console.  More than a few times I would die and not have saved recently.  The autosaves were well done normally, but a few later levels were punishing if you didn’t remember to save constantly.  If you’re looking for even more of a challenge the game does have a hard mode, which whooped my ass six ways to Sunday on console and PC.

Warhammer 40.000: Boltgun is an exquisite boomer-shooter to play. Everything from music to graphics and gameplay screams quality and it is totally worth the $20 price tag.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun rivals the brutality of Doom Eternal and offers up a deadly arsenal of satisfying weapons and absolutely outstanding level design.

The game features every weapon you’d likely hope to see from a Warhammer 40k shooter, from your mainstays like the bolter or plasma gun to things like the vengeance launcher and they all feel great to abuse demons with. Something particularly impressive about W40k: Boltgun is how well Auroch Digital managed to capture the feeling of being a space marine. Your character feels nimble, but also hefty enough that he pushes anything unfortunate enough to get in his way, kind of like a prime Shaq. Jumping from high points causes your marine to absolutely crush anyone below him, and a dedicated charge button lets you push your way out of a group, killing anyone who’s weak enough.

A fast and joyously entertaining rampage through a spot-on recreation of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, Boltgun is the FPS that 40k fans have dreamed of since the first time they inexpertly splodged too-thick paint all over a Space Marine. Pacing issues can’t prevent it from being a bloody good time.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun captures the fast-paced action of classic '90s shooters and accentuates it with an assortment of the Space Marines' finest weaponry.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a great entry into this genre and 40K definitely shines in this format, but it does have some shortcomings on the Steam Deck. If you can lok past the framerate drops in some areas, this will be a worthwhile experience on the Steam Deck!

The best boomer shooter I've played in a long time, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is weapons-grade catnip for genre fans and Warhammer 40,000 fans alike. Indeed in retrospect, crafting a retro style FPS in the Warhammer 40,000 universe feels like something we should have had long before now - so perfect is the fit of form and function. In the Warhammer 40,000 universe there is only war. Apparently there are also supremely great shooters too. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a riotously violent and thoroughly entertaining shooter that everybody needs to play.

May 23, 2023 Read Review

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a solid throwback FPS that makes up for being too generous with the resources by its excellent weapon, monster and level design. The world of Warhammer 40,000 translates fantastically well to this type of game, with decades of lore and design to draw from to create a fully-realized backdrop. The enemies come in a variety of styles from various normal humans to huge and deadly aliens, and they all mix together well to create firefights that need just enough in the way of tactics to keep the brain a little bit active. The only real challenge, though, comes from the game encouraging sloppy play in its frequent less intense sections, so when it's time to pay attention it can be easy to get caught off guard using bad habits. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is an oddly slow burn, but when it finally fires up in the latter half, the action feels worthy of the righteous might of a Space Marine.
